Using Michael Caine as a clue brings it full circle, since he chose his stage name after seeing the film version of The Caine Mutiny listed on a marquee. (There's not many people know that.) I like this quiz.

I mostly like this, but all the plural/possessive mixups are really painful.

@micah: I'd say it's fair since it's the same letters in the same sequence, and it avoids more boring clues like "Belonging to either of a Bronte sister or Ms. Church".

Howards End, no apostrophe. Very common mistake, but no less annoying.

Cluedo? Is that like "Cluedom?" I guess I'm not familiar with the term. Darn it!

Cluedo is the original (British) name for the game Clue. Clue is the American bastardization.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I kept trying "Blind Assassin" for the Bambi one. I see my Disney-induced childhood trauma still has me thinking Bambi's mom got jacked by someone a lot more sinister.

@tvfan2: It's a portmanteau of "clue" and "Ludo" (another board game where players roll dice to race around the board). I guess they didn't think it was well enough known in the States.

Many of these are not two-word works of fiction,as you have decided to omit the from the titles. Your choice does not, however, change the titles of the books.

Can you change it so it accepts "Colour Purple" as well as the americanised spelling? i typed in colour purple and was really annoyed when it turned out to be right!

When I take a quiz that is obviously made by a Brit, and the word "color" or "Harbor" etc don't work, I just add the "u" and not whine about it, knowing that's how they spell it. I also try "football" after trying soccer, and Cluedo for clue, and it's ok. I don't throw my hands up in the air and give up, saying "it didn't accept Pearl Harbour, I don't know what else to do". Weird

Never having heard of "Lord Jim", but remembering Huck's raftmate, I sat there for more than a couple of uneasy seconds trying to figure out exactly what that clue was asking for.

@detektor, the fact that it has origins doesn't make it any less of a terrible name. I cringe every time I see "Cluedo" somewhere.

You might want to make that "Lover of *one's* country", because I kept wondering who wrote a book called "Hillbilly Sports".

@redsxfenway After that comment, I knew I had to look up the exact information. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and The Invisible Man. A Grotesque Romance. by H. G. Wells

@backguy, Alice Walker wrote a book called "The Color Purple." There is no U in the word color in the title of her book. If she wanted to spell color with a U, she would have. The book is by an American, about Americans, set in America.

Really needs to accept "Colour" as an alternative, I was so sure I'd heard of that book but assumed it must be something else and spent ages guessing random things.

Some of the clues are not quite on. 2 Charlottes would not equal "Charlotte's" Maybe think of 2 letter books that don't involve possessives, or find better clues for the possessives.

I'm so tired of this war of the words! If the Brit spelling doesn't work, try the US spelling. If the US spelling doesn't work, try the Brit way. How hard is that?

I prefer "Pale Fire" to "Invisible Man" (or "Blind Assassin" -- sorry Esme.) ;-)
