	@lucia- The use of atomic bombs by the U.S. has been debated for 65 years and will continue to be debated for decades, if not centuries more. The debate can only be honestly had when accurate facts are presented. The target, or 'ground zero' as you put it, was not a school, but the Aioi Bridge. The bomb missed it's target and detonated instead over the Shima Surgical Clinic. I say this not to defend or attack the action, nor to derail your larger question about why a more remote target was not used, but only to make sure that responses to that query are informed and accurate.

	When talking about the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki people often forget about the six years of war that preceded that, where millions of people died. The Japanese committed untold atrocities in China, the Philippines, and many other countries that they had INVADED. Japan was definitely not the just party in that war, not forgetting of course that they were aligned with Nazi Germany. The pervading mentality in Japan at the time was to fight to the death and never surrender in the event of an Allied invasion. So considering that, was it justified to drop these bombs? Not only were hundreds of thousands of Allied deaths prevented, surely millions of Japanese deaths were averted as well.

	I only know what I've been told . . .I've talked to many who were in the service at that time and they are so thankful the bomb was dropped. It saved many lives. (Both allies and axis). If you ask 100 knowledgeable historians about the merits of dropping the bomb, my guess is that the vast majority would say it was necessary. The people of Japan were told and prepared to fight to the finish. They vowed not to give up--ever. It was necessary to drop the bomb--sad to say.
