P.S. Theodore Roosevelt ran as a Republican for Mayor of New York City in 1886 (unsuccessfully) and for Governor of New York (successfully) before winning the Vice Presidency on the Republican ticket as William McKinley's running mate in 1900. After McKinley's assassination in 1901, TR became President and was elected President in his own right as a Republican in 1904.
After retiring in 1908, Theodore Roosevelt unsuccessfully sought the 1912 Republican presidential nomination and then ran for President as the candidate of the Progressive Party, coming in second, below Woodrow Wilson (D) but ahead of the sitting Republican president, William Howard Taft.
Franklin Roosevelt was also elected Governor of New York, in 1928, but as a Democrat. |
