Answers do not have to be guessed in order
"Date" is the issue date of Billboard Magazine on which the song first hit #1. And yes, I'm using a rather broad definition of "rock"- if it's got guitar & drums but isn't country, it probably counts.

Isn't it sad how infrequently rock hits #1, and how bad the songs that
do
make it to the top often are?
In case you're wondering why I counted one Santana song and not his other #1, "Maria Maria", it was a complete judgment call. "Maria Maria" features R&B vocalists and much different instrumentation from the song included in the quiz. If you disagree with me, please let me know, and I will gladly consider alternative views. And in case you're wondering why you don't see Hanson's "MMMBop"... sure, there are instruments, but you can't tell me that it's a rock song.
Enjoy, everybody.

Interesting quiz. Its funny how they count most of these bands as rock such as vertical horizon, matchbox 20, and maroon 5 which are soft rock at best. It is a shame how rock has basically died since the 80's. What happened to good bands like Van Halen, Boston and Springsteen.

I don't think it's dead, there is still some good rock out there. It's just no longer able to be good and a hit on the billboard charts at the same time. Viva la Vida is ok and Makes Me Wonder isn't bad by Maroon 5 standards(which aren't that high). All the rest are terrible.

@Kicking: mmmBop has more rock in its heart and sound than the Plain White T's, Barenaked Ladies and/or Coldplay tracks combined. They may have been teens but they were rockers. Taylor Hanson formed a band with members of Smashing Pumpkins, Fountains of Wayne and Cheap Trick. Sorry K222, I respectfully disagree.

May I suggest accepting "Arms Wide Open" for Creed? The "With" always throws me for a loop.

I respect your respectful disagreement, RG, but I respectfully disagree with you. Hanson is pop, through and through. I don't care how old they were when that song came out- if the same track had been made by thirty-somethings, it would still be pop.
