	Afghanistan was very much independent back then. The British and Russian empire both invaded it, but they were always beaten. Mongolia was part of China, I think, but I'm not sure about that. Also, please accept Turkey.

	Although Afghanistan was independent, it was also within the British sphere of influence (too much trouble to incorporate into the Empire, but the British would invade and overthrow rulers too friendly to other powers). Still, I wouldn't list it as part of the British Empire. Mongolia declared independence in 1911, but it wasn't formally recognized by China till 1921, so including or not including it is up to ones discretion.

	The 19th century 'Great Game' between the major European powers was often in Afghanistan, as Britain wished to safeguard it's Indian interests with a buffer zone and Russia wanted to safeguard it's southern regions in modern-day Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

	I think it is more accurate to list Afghanistan as "Afghanistan (British sphere of influence)". It was not considered part of the British Empire by people of the time and Afghanistan officially stayed neutral in WWI. There was a Russian sphere of influence zone in Afghanistan as well, and to the extent the empires' respective zones of influence bordered each other, Afghanistan is where it happened. One could also argue that parts of the Kashmir region constituted a border between the Russian and British Empire in 1914, I suppose, but it is questionable, as both the Russian/Chinese and British India/Afghanistan borders were unclear at the time (and those borders are still in dispute today).
