| Not surprised to see Locklear on here, but I am surprised that another common Lumbee surname, Lowry, didn't make the cut. I suppose there are are several spelling variants that split up the total. It's also interested that two surnames not of European origin made it so high in the count - Yazzie and Begay (both derived from Navajo words, though Begay can also be English, French, or Eastern European occasionally). Most Native American cultures had naming practices very different from Westerners, so they adopted European last names or invented new surnames from indigenous terms or titles. Great quiz! |
