| Interestingly, several old-form planetary adjectives bear homonym meanings descended from astrology, relating to mood and personality. Those born under Mercury were considered "mercurial" = sprightly, volatile, quick (like the Roman god, and with this meaning extended to the liquid metal element). Those born under Mars were "martial" = warlike. Jupiter → "jovial" = good-humored, joyful. Saturn → "saturnine" = gloomy, morose. Astronomers tended to abandon these old adjectives because the words became too firmly associated with the astrological meanings. |
