RE the guinea question, I believe (and don't hold me to this, I'm vaguely remembering some renaissance travelogues), that 'guinea' was used to refer to the people before the place, i.e. the guineas. One can imagine (this is purely hypothetical now), a situation in which a European explorer is trying to communicate to a woman from the region 'what are you?' and she responds 'guinea', and he presumes it refers to the whole peoples, not just the women. Of course this is just a hypothesis. |
