Great game! My hometown (Hampton Roads) and former home (Kentuckiana) both made it!

"The District" is not a nickname for the DC metro area, but for the city proper. Nobody would use "the District" to refer to Maryland or Virginia suburbs - the whole purpose of "the District" is to distinguish DC from the suburbs.

Good point, johnlk. I had originally gone with "National Capital Region," but that sounded a bit dry compared to the other, more colloquial answers. But a little research shows that "The District" indeed refers to the city only. I'll change it to "D.C." instead -- hopefully it's not too much of a giveaway...

No Boston? You could have put "The Hub" or "Beantown."

weizenugb, keep in mind that this is a quiz about metropolitan area nicknames, not cities. Both of your suggestions refer to the city of Boston, not the larger region around it. The only nickname for that I'm aware of is "Greater Boston," which is a gimme for a quiz. Similarly, the nickname for the Chicago area is usually Chicagoland, but the answer's right there in the name, so I left it out.

For DC, I'd use "the Beltway" instead or something like that. When I lived in Bethesda, it was "DC" for the city only.

How lame is OKC that their metro area nickname is "OKC Metro?"

I love that when I typed in Newark for the first one, it actually accepted it. That alone makes this a five star quiz!

I have never heard anybody refer to the Miami area as the Gold Coast and I have tons of family there and visit often. People either simply say the name of the largest city they live by (ex: Miami, West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale) or just call it South Florida. I think that nickname was given to the region by the state tourism board when they were splititng the state up to promote regions in tourist info books; however, this region's particular nickname is rarely used in conversation or by the media.

The Bay Area refers to the 7 million people who live anywhere near the San Francisco and San Pablo Bay. That includes Oakland and San Jose. At the vary least you should list those cities as you did with Hampton Roads.
