| Oh, I think the Finrod thing is because Finarfin was Finrod for a long time, into the sixties I think (that's why there's a reference to the golden house of Finrod in Appendix F in LotR). The name Finarfin was a very late development. Before he was Finrod Finrod was Inglor (implying Gildor Inglorion was meant to be of his house) and sometimes I believe simply Felagund, before that was decided to be of Dwarvish origin! In other words, that situation is a real mess if you go beyond the nice, consistent, published surface. Regardless, it should clearly be Finarfin now. I'd theoretically love the idea of making Finarfin come up by typing Finrod because I'm an incorrigible nerd, but I don't think it would in real life be any sort of good idea...not practical at all. By that logic Elves should be included that were only mentioned in Book of Lost Tales or whatever. And this quiz is about the Silmarillion, not every idea Tolkien ever had related to it. The line must be drawn somewhere, and I say the sooner the better. |
