He says "I think I need some time alone" in the background which is missing.

My source says it's "time I had some time alone", which is in there. (As is a bonus answer for a common mishearing of that lyric...)

I thought that it had the lyrics in order, like some other quizzes I've seen... I was thinking, "what sort of a dud song has the lyrics 'an and as' or 'I in is it'...".

i guess there isnt enough space to make this an answer-in-order quiz. this way it gets a little annoying when youre typing the lyrics in your head, but you have to go back and delete all the repeated words. but fun quiz :)

They're really saying "light a motive?" I'd have lost my house on that one.

With all respect to my favorite website on earth, if you guys don't ditch the new Flash advertisements with sound that plays automatically and which you CANNOT permanently set to "off", it's going to be the End Of Sporcle As We Know It.

@strags11: Since many ads run regionally, it makes it difficult to police (or even see) every single ad. If you see this ad in the future and if you can figure out what url the ad takes you to, paste that into an email to us (feedback@sporcle.com) and we can investigate.

This is almost impossible without the words in order. You can't make any guesses based on context.

How are Leonard and Bernstein not the most-guessed words? They were the first thing I thought of. And nearly the only words I knew. I realized I sing a lot of, "Uh-oh, overflow population ommrrho, lidamotorfomoro nanananana singing down your yeah" to this song.

These aren't the lyrics. "Feed it up a knock speed" should be "Feed it off an aux speak". "Left her wasn't coming" should be "Left to west and coming". "Light a motive" should be "Light a votive".

i knew knowing all the words would come in handy at some point, other than impersonating peter griffin in the stroke episode of family guy. having said that, i still only got 133 because the layout made me like 'huuuuuuuh?' for about a minute. yeah, i'm an idiot.

Honestly, aside from the chorus, I usually just mentally insert Michael Stipe's saying "mumble mumble mumble mumble... LEONARD BERNSTEIN!... mumble mumble mumble TOURNAMENT OF LIES!" You could have claimed he was reading the Magna Carta and I probably would have believed you.

Thanks for publishing my quiz, Sporcle! This "words in alphabetical order, not order of the song/quote" was fad a couple years back, when I made the quiz. It seems like the Sporcle community likes the "guess which song this is" style more, but either way I think the idea is to make the quiz harder than just "do you remember the lyrics."

I'm afraid this quiz is deeply ill-conceived. If you look at, say, http://www.retroweb.com/rem/lyrics/song_EndOfTheWorld.html , which also claims to be authoritative, there are a huge number of differences. You really can't reasonably ask people to name the lyrics to a song for which there are no definitive lyrics.

@JoeMurphy - you are welcome, however we just decided to remove it from the home page. On further investigation, Tahnan (and others) are correct and it is challenging to find the definitive source on these lyrics. If the worlds ends, it won't matter. If it doesn't, we will revisit this once the weekend is over. Sorry for the trouble.

Regardless, a fun quiz! Definitive or not, part of the challenge lies in deciphering Stipe's frenzied lyrics anyhow. Also, we are still here, but what a subtle move publishing the quiz on May 21st. :)

It's the first song I ever memorized, but with the words not being in order, I couldn't quite get all of it. Still a great song.
