How about Haiti? Wyclef Jean hit #1 with Shakira on Hips Don't Lie

@dudeperson: True, and Mexico should be taken off the list (Carlos Santana was born in Mexico, but the band Santana was formed in San Francisco, California, United States.)

Yeah, if Santana counts for Mexico, then Billy Ocean should count for Trinidad and Tobago. But I would just not count Santana for Mexico. Also, it's Masekela, not Masakela.

Those were exactly my doubts. Wyclef Jean moved to the USA when he was 9 and developed his musical career in the US, that's why he wasn't allowed to become president of Haiti. I'll take Mexico off, but Haiti will not come in the game.

On second thought, I will put Wyclef Jean in there.

If Wyclef Jean would see the results, he would get a huge ego boost with a percentage like that :P.

I love how some artists talk about how they're from such and such a country (Akon, Pitbull) yet they're born in the States. I typed Senegal three times so thanks a lot Akon!!!! Great quiz though! Can't believe I forgot the bottom two on the right though :(

H0limkill: I'm betting some people come into this quiz thinking the quiz is about FOREIGN countries with Billboard #1 singles. I've seen it on a lot of other quizzes about countries associated with something based in the US- people think the US doesn't count.

If you're going to include Wyclef for Haiti, why not include Santana? "Smooth" was a song essentially by Carlos Santana, not by the original San Francisco band Santana that broke up a long time ago.

First of all, this is a fantastic quiz. Second, it would be interesting if you put some extra info, like how many artists charted from that country, or how many songs from that country, or how many of that country's songs reached no. 1, etc. While I realize this might be too difficult/tedious to count, it would've been cool. 5 globes anyway for a great idea.

yeah, the santana band's lineup has changed so often that i'm not sure if it makes sense to justify his exclusion based on the fact that it wasn't formed in the states. he, the only constant member, is unquestionably not born in the usa.

If he really wants to draw a line, the quizmaker should declare one way or another that either we're counting based on where the artist was born, or we're counting based on where they began their musical career, or where they lived when they were a teenager, or something. Just pick a dividing line and that way we can settle the Wyclef/Billy Ocean/Santana disputes.

I consider Santana as a US-based band. And Billy Ocean was born in Trinidad and Tobago, but back then it was UK territory. So you could say, he always had an English passport or something like that. Wyclef Jean is Haitian to me. This is my dividing line.

Rihanna was born in Barbados, but her music career took off while she was in the US. I feel like her hits should be moved into the US category.

@DaeHan11 She grew up in Barbados and her first musical steps were made there. Rihanna was 16 when she moved to the US, so I consider her as Barbadian.

For the one in 2011, I began skimming through my mind, and eventually decided (for some odd reason) that you had counted Hawaii as independent with Bruno Mars. Looking back, I feel very unhappy with myself.

Hmmm. So diverse. White anglophone countries - 1,168; rest of the world - 50 (19 being English speaking Commonwealth countries)...and the Scandinavians (8) sing without a foreign accent.

Given that the Czech Republic's sole #1 on this list came in 1985, could you not also accept Czechoslovakia as an answer, as it had not split at that point. It was my last one to get and I was guessing USSR, Czecholovakia, Yugoslavia etc.
