A bold claim - but next time that you should remember that your ignorance is not the same as knowledge, and the fact that you don't know much about film history or much about foreign filmmakers doesn't mean that your claims are in any way accurate. Those of us familiar with some of the great women filmmakers would immediately recognize the idiocy of your claim. But I am glad to see that you're so willing to admit your ignorance of the history of cinema.

Just to piss off ChicagoRed I will now name ten living (so no deceased masters like Shepitko, Reiniger, or Riefenstahl) female directors who have greater talent and better filmographies than at least five or six of the men in this game: Claire Denis, Chantal Akerman, Catherine Breillat, Jane Campion, Barbara Kopple, Elaine May, Lucrecia Martel, Kelly Reichardt, Agnes Varda, Lina Wertmuller - some of them don't yet have lengthy filmographies (neither does Mendes), but they are all responsible for at least two masterpieces, which puts them ahead of several of the directors on this list. Several of them (Varda, Denis, Akerman, Campion) are rather easily among the greatest living directors.
In fact, you'd have a hard time naming many male directors at all (certainly not half of those on this list) who have better filmographies than Varda or Akerman. I could put up the filmographies of even the most obscure choices on my list and it would pretty obviously outclass the filmography of several of the directors in this game (Hooper, Mendes, Darabont) - assuming you've actually seen the films in question (a silly assumption - of course you haven't seen them, otherwise you wo |
