I tried to make bonus answers include other variants. One variant (you'll see which one if you do it) can be used for multiple languages, so I stuck it under Dutch even though it's used all over the place (including Dutch.) If anyone thinks of any more alts that should be included under the languages, say so and I'll fix it.

That's what I used as a double-check (Yahoo answers was the main), I just don't like to source Wikipedia. There's a "behind the names" page that I'll source eventually but the site is down right now. Note that this isn't EVERY variation of John, just SOME variations.

Hans is derived from Johannes (and it counts if you type it in) and Ewan is derived from Eoghan, which is possibly derived from Eugene (behindthenames is back up!) but in any case has nothing to do with John.

Ieuaun or Ioan would be a much better choice for the Welsh equivalent.

Ioan, maybe. Ieuaun? You can't just mash in vowels and say it's Welsh.

No maybes about it. Ioan, definitely. Ieuan, also definitely. Apologies that an extra u made its way into Ieuan there, was merely a typo. I wasn't just mashing vowels in and saying it's Welsh; I am Welsh ;)

Gotcha. Already added Ioan and Ieuan a while ago, but yeah, I was thinking Ieuauauauaan or whatever was a bit much.

It's just not the same when you're on a road trip, and turn to your buddies and say "Next exit, pull over. I got to go to the Giovanni."

I'm unable to make changes to it now that it's published, in response to Moe and LaStic. For all the suggestions for other languages, this isn't intended to be a 'John in every language' quiz (and I still can't change it); 'Johan' and 'Ion' are already accepted, so why would I add new languages for them? As for Joan, again, this isn't a quiz for every single language.

Ewan is a form of Eugene, as was stated in previous comments. And yeah, sporcle admins can make changes, but I personally can't anymore.

Love how the name, this ancient name, cuts through time and national barriers...are there others, say like James or Paul, we could do the same with? Engaging quiz, thanks...

James is actually a derivative of Jacob (and it's also my first name, documentwise) which has no equivalent in several prominent languages like French or German (the closest being Jacques and Jakob, obviously referring to Jacob.) However, there are some interesting James derivatives, my favorite being Seamus.

It's so sweet that you type in Jack and get credit for John. That always made the first day of school interesting-trying to explain to the class why everyone calls me Jack when my real name is John...

Anyone else see the movie The Man From Earth? I get the feeling the lead character in that movie would have been able to ace this quiz.
