Great quiz, but it should take some alternate terms -- "hammer" should work not only for the ones called "hammer," but also OoT's Megaton Hammer, "gold gauntlets" should work for "golden gauntlets," etc.
Wish I had thought of it first!
Sep 26th, 2009 at 05:55 GMT
The difference is that Megaton Hammer and Skull Hammer have very memorable names, whereas this isn't the case for Magic Hammer. The Bow got all the bows because there's so much variation that I felt it would be stickler-y. Same goes for Slingshot, as it was rarely used and few people would know it's the "Fairy" Slingshot (I don't want this to be a game where people know the answer but not the right wording.) With the hammers, though, I'm confident the vast majority will know their full names. I mean, Skull Hammer is literally a giant skull, and OoT is so popular that I'm sure people know Megaton.

Not accepting 'Fire arrow', 'ice arrow' or 'light arrow' is just mean.
Sep 26th, 2009 at 15:08 GMT
Didn't realize that was the case, fixing it.
Sep 26th, 2009 at 17:15 GMT
Beneath the well is kind of a dungeon, right? So shouldn't there be a spot for that and the Lens of Truth?
Sep 26th, 2009 at 20:29 GMT
No, and there shouldn't be one for Iron Boots in Ice Cavern either. Those are subdungeons.
Sep 27th, 2009 at 18:04 GMT
Wait, I thought anything with a dungeon map and compass qualifies as a dungeon. And Ganon's tower doesn't have either. Oh well, great quiz anyway, makes me wish I played the two oracle games.
Sep 27th, 2009 at 18:43 GMT
Main dungeons are dungeons that get main plot objectives done. Gathering sages, gathering pendants, all that jazz, with the exception of Fortress of Winds (in which Link THOUGHT he would be collecting an Element.) Subdungeons don't go towards your main objective, but instead just help along the way.

Good job, very complete. 75/88.

Excellent quiz, though it reminds me that for all its greatness, Majora's Mask really suffered in the dungeon items department.
Oct 2nd, 2009 at 03:34 GMT
No kidding. I think the shapeshift masks made up for the dull arrows, but even though the spacing and sizes were good I really would've liked more dungeons in that game. Especially given the lack of a real final dungeon, that just killed me.
Oct 2nd, 2009 at 08:43 GMT
Great quiz. Reminds me how awesome the Oracle games were. The Switch Hook is probably the coolest Zelda item of all time.
Oct 2nd, 2009 at 15:05 GMT
Magnet Gloves are cooler. Capcom did some amazing things.
Oct 5th, 2009 at 18:50 GMT
Wait you also got the giant's mask in stone tower temple right?
Oct 6th, 2009 at 17:29 GMT
Yes, but the Light Arrows are the dungeon item. Giant's Mask are found at the end and used for one fight in the game. Hardly a dungeon item as it solves no dungeon puzzles and is only used once. Finally, masks are sub-items in MM.

'level 2 power bracelet' should also work.
Oct 9th, 2009 at 03:59 GMT
Eh, can't imagine many would type that, but no skin off my back. Level 2 Power Bracelet and Power Bracelet Level 2 both count now, I mean why not?
Oct 10th, 2009 at 07:03 GMT
I am so pleased that I got nearly half after only having played the first 3! Anyway, fun quiz...brings back memories.
Oct 13th, 2009 at 00:24 GMT
I've played Ocarina of Time more times than I can remember and somehow, every single time I take this quiz, I can't come up with "Megaton Hammer". (I keep typing "Goron Hammer" for some reason. I don't know why my brain is convinced of this.) Still, I love this quiz!
Nov 4th, 2009 at 15:34 GMT
Magic boomerang should count for magical boomerang.
Nov 4th, 2009 at 22:31 GMT
Magical Boomerang is never called Magic Boomerang in any of the games. So no, it shouldn't.
Nov 10th, 2009 at 13:42 GMT
ah, good time remembering all the games. Good, hard quiz. Definatly nominating this one.
Nov 11th, 2009 at 01:09 GMT
I Think Keys should be an answer for the Water Temple in OoT

I just notised that all the main items in MM are just arrows and the bow >_> Good game though.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 18:19 GMT
I tried red/blue shirt, tunic, armor, but couldn't come up with the word mail for the Link to the Past items. Any chance for some leeway on those?
Nov 13th, 2009 at 18:32 GMT
Good game but definitely need more leeway, like the armor, hammers, bow and boomerang, magical boomerang. Nice idea though.
Comment below threshold:
Nov 13th, 2009 at 19:21 GMT
They're called Mail in the game, and while I'd love to help you out I can't change things now that it's published. In any case, rex, given "bow" works for all bows (an act of overgenerosity in my opinion), what more leeway could you possibly want? I mean, seriously, do you want to get the answer by typing in the letter "B" or something?
Nov 13th, 2009 at 19:39 GMT
Excellent quiz idea! Though I agree with other commenters that it needs a little more leeway with answers. (e.g. "boomerang" should probably be sufficient for "Gale Boomerang" and "Magical Boomerang")
Nov 13th, 2009 at 19:44 GMT
The Magical Boomerang isn't the Boomerang, though. It's an upgrade of the boomerang. And the Gale Boomerang has different functions from the boomerang (all those fan puzzles.) Unlike the bow, which does the same thing despite having different named, there is an important difference between the boomerang and the gale boomerang, and a HUGE difference between the boomerang and the magical boomerang.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 20:07 GMT
Yeah, definitely need more leeway, and you definitely need to relax... it's ony a game...
Nov 13th, 2009 at 20:52 GMT
I do appreciate the feedback (a sentiment I regretfully didn't add to my first post-publication comment due to my shock at the idea that "bow" was too strict an answer) but if I had allowed some of the suggestions made then this quiz would lose its point. If you've played the games or know enough about them to want to take this quiz, there's no reason on earth you wouldn't know that, for instance, the boomerang in Twilight Princess is the Gale Boomerang. By allowing sweeping answers to count for specific things that really ARE specific beyond just the name, I would be doing a disservice to those who want a challenge of memory in the quiz. Moreover, as I've said, I can't change anything, so this whole leeway thing is pretty futile. In any case, thanks Sporcle for publishing it and thanks to the folks who played or will play this quiz.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 21:29 GMT
"Boomerang" doesn't get me "Bow and Boomerang", but "Bow" does. I know it's out of your hands now, but I think that's something that needs to get changed.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 21:52 GMT
Huh, that's weird. I specifically remember putting "boomerang" in as an alternate answer. This was my first quiz, and thus the quiz where I learned how to make alternate answers, and that was the first alternate answer I ever made (and as we all know, you always remember your first.) But sure enough, you're right. Fascinating.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 22:32 GMT
"Silver arrow" doesn't work? Seriously? Is the plural really necessary? And I was pretty sure the red and blue "mail" in Link to the Past were called red/blue "jerkins". But maybe I'm wrong there.
Nov 13th, 2009 at 23:00 GMT
It's the green jerkin, blue mail and red mail. And I'd change the Silver Arrows to Silver Arrow like I did for the MM variants, but again, my hands are tied.
Nov 14th, 2009 at 00:54 GMT
I loved the quiz, nice job. Zelda is my all-time favorite video game series.
Nov 14th, 2009 at 02:04 GMT
Needs more leeway and more crossover answers. Who the heck knows the difference between the Magic Hammer and the Megaton Hammer? And not accepting 'armor' for the mails is just ridiculous.
Nov 14th, 2009 at 02:33 GMT
TL, please read the comments before posting. It's...it's just painful how clearly your points have been addressed.
Nov 14th, 2009 at 06:39 GMT
I couldn't figure out the Cane of Somaria. I knew the name of it, but I kept spelling it "Samaria." Same with the mails; I kept trying red/blue tunic, suit, clothes, etc. Oh well, I got 62 correct, which isn't bad considering I haven't played the first two games, Link's Awakening, or either of the GBC games in years.
