If memory serves, the Free State (ie Ireland/Eire) only came into being in 1921.

Your memory serves you well, Ireland has been removed. (Although I'm not sure how to edit the map)

The Soviet Union didn't form until 1922.

As it is now titled 1922, can Eire/Ireland be reinstated?

Sorry, I found out the map was from 1922, so I switched the title. Ireland's back in.

Should be Irish Free State, not Ireland, as the displayed answer, I think.

Also, the map is wrong - Poland's eastern border was well to the east of where you show it. Also, either it should be Soviet Union/USSR or you should have separate answers for Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. They were all theoretically independent until late in 1922, when the USSR was formed.

OK, I changed it to Soviet Union and changed the answer for Ireland. Like I said, I don't know how to change the map, so I can't move Poland's borders. Please comment if there's anymore problems :)

Is there a reason that Danzig isn't an answer?

Danzig wasn't on my list, but after researching it, I'll put it on the quiz.

Saar also needs to be added.

Sorry, I obviously didn't have the best list. After further research, I don't think there's anything I've missed, but please comment if there is.

@emilkr Iceland became independent in 1944 and has never been a kingdom.

@giraki: Iceland became an indepedent kingdom in 1918. Denmark granted it independence and recognised it as a seperate state, but they shared the same monarch and Denmark still controlled Iceland's defence.

I think you should accept Ottomon Empire rather than Turkey. Turkey was formed as a successor state in 1923. Other than that great quiz.

The Saar basin was not a country in post WW1 Europe. The Saar basin was placed under the control of the League of Nations post WW1, with the economic spoils of the area aiding the French post war recovery. The population remained predominently German throughout this period and remained so until its return to the German Reich in the 1930's. It is true that the French would have been delighted with the Saar and the Ruhr gaining autonomy, to weaken Germany and provide more security to France, and the mandate provided by the League of Nations did this to an extent. However, the League of Nations mandate did not create the country of the Saar.

The Soviet Union has withdrawn from WW1 after the Bolsheviks revolution (Russian Revolution). The Russian Empire however has entered WW1. If you mean the Russian Empire than you are correct, and if you mean the Soviet Union then you are mistaken.

I'd say Iceland was only quasi-independent before 1944. Its status was comparable to the Cook Islands and Niue today - which are not considered separate states by sporcle. I'm not sure that Danzig or Saarland should be considered countries, either - neither was really fully self-governing.
