| You would think with all those ski resorts, Japan and the US would be better at international alpine events. I know Russia has only lately been putting $$ into tourism infrastructure, but I am shocked that Russia is down there with Chile. |

| One of these, days, I'll go skiing in Algeria (see map in the source box) just to tick people off by saying that I've skied in a Saharan country. |
 | Radovan: | Jul 10th, 2010 at 14:20 GMT | | 21 points |
| so Latvia, whose highest peak is some 300m, has more ski resorts than Russia? |
 | Jam1: | Jul 10th, 2010 at 15:34 GMT | | 10 points |
| @Radovan: Yes. Latvia's the perfect place for cross-country skiing and beginners skiing; cold and relatively flat. |

| Cool! Surprised that the Andes aren't better represented. I was sure I was going to get something with Ecuador and Peru. But moving through Europe completely forgot Austria. Oops. |

| I'm astonished that New Zealand is the least guessed, I always thought it was the tourist image there, snow capped mountains and lord of the rings and all that. |

Nice Quiz = Nominated
Also, for a fun bonus I thought the UAE would be a good one. Check it out http://www.skidxb.com/ |

| Thanks ChinaWhite and psubball1 for the nominations! @psubball1: I actually live nearby 2 indoor ski slopes, but an indoor ski resort... well, its the sort of thing that only happens in Dubai! |

| Good quiz... what about Australia? |
 | Jam1: | Jul 19th, 2010 at 19:02 GMT | | 3 points |
| Australia only has 12 resorts, so not enough to make it onto this quiz. |
 | bahhbara: | Jul 30th, 2010 at 22:25 GMT | | 5 points |
| More to the point, how does Belgium have 11? |
 | Jam1: | Jul 31st, 2010 at 20:15 GMT | | 3 points |
| Like the stereotype, Belgium is mostly flat, however they have the Ardennes and other mountain ranges in the East of the country. |
 | chikka2: | Aug 4th, 2010 at 03:45 GMT | | 3 points |
| Russia was guessed third highest and actually has only 17 resorts; a bit of a surprise. |
 | skye_eg: | Aug 27th, 2010 at 16:59 GMT | | 3 points |
| @midnightdj and gttrsnmp: Greece is exactly like California: Mediterranean climate and very, very mountainous. @gttrsnp: Spain and Greece are not tropical like Brazil and Malaysia. Also, Brazil and Malaysia are quite flat. Greece and Spain are mountainous. @chikka2: Russia has cold winters, but the country is mostly flat. |
 | DC13: | Apr 25th, 2011 at 18:51 GMT | | 3 points |
| How is New Zealand the second-least country guessed? It's highly mountainous and really far south. And all the northern hemisphere ski teams train there in their off-season. |
 | BekBek: | May 22nd, 2011 at 14:29 GMT | | 2 points |
| I'd like to see a quiz that relates the number of ski resorts to the total or the mountainous area of the country. That would really highlight the top skiing destinations of the world. Just think about those 275 ski resorts squeezed into tiny Austria compared to the US's 428, given the Rocky Mountain's abundant potential. |

| I just mean it's very far away from all the rest of the countries. And that I was trying desperately to think of another country in eastern Europe as the time was running out... |

| It's pretty funny that Greece has more ski resorts than Russia, China and Chile. They're all bigger and contain or border the tallest peaks for their continents (Elbrus, Everest and Aconcagua). |
 | Golden: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 04:31 GMT | | 32 points |
| Man, Nepal really needs to catch up! Surely theres room for ski resorts on Everest, its an untapped market! |
 | newenglander: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 04:58 GMT | | 16 points |
| @golden-i think the week-long hike/yak ride from kathmandu would be kind of a turn off for tourists. |
 | StupidBunny: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 04:59 GMT | | 30 points |
| So how does Latvia, which also makes onto the "flattest countries" quiz, manage to have more ski resorts than New Zealand? |
 | LB1973: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 05:09 GMT | | 6 points |
| Hmm I'm dubious, the map says the uk has 12 for a start. Now I know of five that are in the highlands where I'm from, so I went investigating. Theres 4 more ski tows around and none of them could remotely be called a resort! so thats 9. Where are the other three?
Turkey has apparently 20 according to wiki but 9 according to the map. It needs to be defined. |
 | Bobman1: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 05:58 GMT | | 5 points |
| I'm curious how "resort" is defined. I'm guessing it means a hill with seasonal snow and a mechanism for hauling people up it. There are many ski areas I know of that would not qualify for most people's ideas of a resort (lodging, more than one place to eat....) |
 | Sheldon: | Aug 24th, 2011 at 08:02 GMT | | 28 points |
@StupidBunny: It's probably because the South Island only has about 1 million people living there so, like most things here, the market isn't big enough to sustain a huge quantity of a particular service.
Eg. Until recently we only ever had two mobile phone networks; only three main TV channels; just the one bus to cover all of Auckland's public transport needs... We're also getting a motorway put in soon too so that's quite exciting... You know you're a small nation when a penguin makes it into the news every night for a month, and when one sheep gets a funeral service. |

| Surprised at Denmark not having ANY ski resorts, except for 1 in Greenland. And Spain has 37 but Portugal only has 1??? |
