	It was also ruled by the Arabs, simultaneously with the Byzantine Empire, for several hundred years. Then it was a rebellious province of Byzantium in the 1180s, and conquered by Richard the Lionheart in 1191, although it's not quite correct to say it was ruled by England...he just held it by himself, then sold it to the Templars, who sold it to the Lusignans.

	@AdamBishop: It was ruled simultaneously by the Arabs and Byzantines for hundreds of years? Can you cite a source for this? Also, I know England's not exactly correct, but Richard the Lionheart wasn't a country, and he was the English king, so you can still say it was the land of an Englishman, thus English. @Carbon_rod: Ancient Greece was also a collection of city states. During that time period Cyprus was controlled by Phoenician city states, so its fair to say it was part of Phoenicia.

	But if you're asking for the countries that ruled Cyprus, Phoenicia simply isn't a country. It's like saying Italy owned Crete, when it was Venice. Sure, same culture, but hardly the same entity.

	If you're putting no end date on UK occupation (1878- ) because of the Sovereign Base Areas at Episkopi and Akotiri, then I wonder if Turkey would also count for her occupation in 1974-75 (or 1974 to 1983, when the current Turkish Republic of North Cyprus was proclaimed). Or was that too transient? You could finesse the question, perhaps, by accepting "Turkey" for Ottoman Empire and then letting "Turkey" filling two blanks: 1571-1878 and 1974-1975/1983. But some of my premises may well be mistaken Since I'm thinking objectively here, not trying to take a position on how independent or sovereign the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus may be, it might make sense (in the same way that Sporcle treats Taiwan as independent regardless of the Chinese or U.N. position) to add 1975- or 1983- for "North Cyprus" or "Turkish Republic of North Cyprus". Thirty-six (or 28) years is a long time to be fleeting, temporary or transient.

	@shakescene: I currently have the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a bonus answer, as it is a self-proclaimed republic with recognition only from Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus still claims sovreignty over its land, which is recognised by all but 1 of the world's countries. From this, it is fair to say the TRNC is not a sovereign state, but it still has dde facto control over Northern Cyprus, so I included it as a bonus.

	I can't get on Google Books at the moment, but Wikipedia has some articles about the medieval history of Cyprus that talks about the Byzantine-Arab condominium. Also, the Government of Cyprus website says "in 688 AD the island of Cyprus was declared neutral, with no garrisons stationed in it, the collected taxes being divided among the Arabs and the Emperor" (http://www.cyprus.gov.cy/portal/portal.nsf/All/DC0113EBEFF46126C2257028003F7442?OpenDocument, if that works).

	The Phoenecians established colonies on Cyprus but during that period most of the country was controlled by Mycenaean Greeks until the Assyrian conquest. I would have expected Knights Templer and Lusignan to have been answers. Part of the Island is presently administered by the UN

	@zeppelinoid: The Knights Templar, the Lusignans and the UN are not "countries" so don't count. I've just quickly researched the Mycenaeans and most sites come to a consensus that they did occupy part of the island for some time so i will add it. Thanks for the help.

	@Jam1: Thanks. I am not really certain if the Mycenaeans, Phoenicians or even Classical Greeks count as unified countries. Perhaps the Knights Templer, Lusignans and the UN should be included as bonuses?
