| @rm321: Yes. The president of France also serves as the Prince of Andorra alongside the Bishop of Urgell. In 1278, the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix signed a treaty establishing Andorra. Whoever were the Bishop and the Count were the co-princes of Andorra. However, in 1589, the Count of Foix inherited the French throne, so the Bishop of Urgell and the French King were the co-princes of Andorra. And as the French Monarchy was abolished in the French revolution, it became the president of France who became co-prince of Andorra. So to this day, the French President is co-prince of Andorra. In fact, Andorra is today the only country in the World, where its leader is elected by citizens of another country. |
