UAE makes sense given all these people living in Dubai.

Why Cyprus and Turkey? Interesting quiz!

Cyprus used to be part of the British Empire (one of the oldest parts actually, claimed by Richard I on the way to the Crusades) and is a home for British holiday makers. If you got there now, some of the towns are entirely British ex-pats and become ghost towns in the winter. Turkey, I'm not as sure. The British have a long interest in the Eastern Mediterranean - Palestine, Egypt, Greece (partly), Cyprus.

Why so many in Spain?

@wst: People go there for holiday and then choose to stay there full-time when they retire, at least that's part of it I'd wager. What surprises me is the lack of India here, I know it's mostly Indians coming to the UK, but I'd have thought there was some traffic the other way around as well? I mean, at least more than to Thailand or Portugal. Oh well, the more you know...

I was also shocked at the absence of India in this quiz, as well as Belgium (what with the EU and NATO offices, etc)

Good quiz. Interesting mix of traditional places for expat jobs (UAE), "this is a great holiday - let's retire here" (Spain), and traditional receivers of immigrants (Australia).

Surprised Australia was above Spain, I guess most people who move to Oz are young whereas there are probably many more moving to Spain, but they are older so just don't stick around in the statistics for as long.

Turkey is also a retirement place for the British. I was expecting to see Japan, with all the English language schools and all. Those "Eikaiwa Gakkou", namely "English Conversation Schools" are known to hire native English speakers as teachers, regardless of their teaching skills and experience, or lack thereof.

Shouldn't these be "British emmigrants" not "immigrants" if they've left Britain?

@cdvillafan: They've left Britain, so they're emigrants, but they've also moved into new countries, so they're also immigrants. Either is correct.

Regarding Cyprus: it's not so much Cyprus' historic ties with the UK. It's because Cyprus is basically a mini-Spain.

Cyprus has two British army bases, Germany has several more - I think they also contribute to the large number of immigrants
