| Sorry, but I have to disagree with you esteemed fellow Sporclers. I teach my students exactly what Bombay said is erroneous: that Latin America is the term to use when referring to all of South America, the Carribean, Central America and Mexico. (To some of them -and their parents- it's ALL South America.) I do make it clear to them that not each and every nation in those latitudes speaks a Latin language, but it clearly dominates the area. Surgically removing the small places that speak English and Dutch from the broad designation of Latin America would be geographically strange. Otherwise, what WOULD you call that part of the world? Would you argue that Quebec is part of Latin America? If so, the term loses all geographic meaning. |
