| @waterjoe: yes, Timor-Leste should be retracted from the list by the reflexive property you mention (Indonesia was occupied, in part, by Britain and therefore any country that derives from Indonesia, in whole or in part after that time, should be considered to have been occupied by Britain). Agree with it or not, that's the same reasoning that excludes Thailand from the quiz (France never occupied Thailand as a whole, just part of some border provinces). Separately from that it turns out according to the source (http://www.worldstatesmen.org/East_Timor.html) that the British occupied Dutch Timor (1811 - 1816) subsequently known as West Timor (which at the time included the Oecussi-Ambeno district). Then on 20 Apr 1859 the Netherlands and Portugal agreed on a border delimitation. As a result, the Dutch recognized Portuguese claims to the Oecussi enclave, which while located in West Timor (formerly Dutch Timor) became part of Portugal and thence part of modern Timor-Leste. The British occupied the Oecussi enclave during their occupation of Dutch Timor and the Oecussi enclave is now part of the modern state of Timor-Leste. Therefore part of Timor-Leste (the Oecussi enclave) was occupied by Britain and Timor-Leste should not appear in this quiz for that reason too. |
