| Nice quiz. I've proposed abbreviations for all the multi-word countries (except for South Africa and St Lucia): http://www.sporcle.com/games/tahitiwahini/common_country_name_alternatives Essentially, it attempts to turn each multi-word country into an acronym (which it does for 24 countries) and for those countries where such an acronym would lead to ambiguity it simply uses the first word as the abbreviation for the country (which it does for 9 countries). The full list of the multi-word abbreviations follows: AB (Antigua and Barbuda), BF (Burkina Faso), Bosnia (Bosnia and Herzegovina), CAR (Central African Republic), Costa (Costa Rica), CV (Cape Verde), Czech (Czech Republic), Dominican (Dominican Republic), DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo), EG (Equatorial Guinea), El (El Salvador), TL (Timor-Leste), FSM (Federated States of Micronesia), GB (Guinea-Bissau), CI (Cote d'Ivoire), Marshall (Marshall Islands), NK (North Korea), NZ (New Zealand), PNG (Papua New Guinea), RC (Republic of the Congo), Saudi (Saudi Arabia), Solomon (Solomon Islands), Sierra (Sierra Leone), SK (South Korea), SKN (St Kitts and Nevis), SM (San Marino), Sri (Sri Lanka), STP (Sao Tome and Principe), SVG (St Vincent and the Grenadines), TT (Trinidad and Tobago), UAE (United Arab Emirates), UK (United Kingdom), USA (United States of America), and VC (Vatican City). Gambia is simply Gambia (rather than The Gambia). |
