Who comes up with these names? Hurricane Fifi -- seriously? THAT sounds like a destructive name right there.

[1] Hurricane Carol (1954) and Hurricane Edna (1954) were retired retroactively, but only after Hurricane Carol (1965) and Tropical Storm Edna (1968) had already been named. [2] Hurricane Hilda (1964) and Hurricane Janet (1955) were also retired retroactively, but before the name actually was used again. There needs to be some sort of footnote for these storms, because the date shown can be misleading.

@santosaurus -- I thought the same thing -- imagine going through all of that suffering and loss, and having it be at the hands of a storm named Fifi?? It's like being mocked on top of everything else. And you know, I would bet cash money that Hurricane Gloria was 1984 -- that was the one that blew down the old My-T-Fine Coco Malt sign in Hoboken, and I said, something bad is going to happen, and it did,the next day, and it was 1984 :(

Tropical Storm Allison is the only tropical storm on this list. Can anyone tell me what was so significant about her?

@Annie: Due to the extreme destruction, the name Allison was retired in the Spring of 2002, and will never again be used in the Atlantic basin; the 2001 incarnation of Allison is the only Atlantic tropical system to have its name retired without reaching hurricane strength. The name was replaced with Andrea in the 2007 season.

@AtoneMENT: Nope. Gloria was definitely in '85. I had just gotten married a few months before and I remember being worried about possible damage to our new condo (also in NJ) so soon after having moved in. Thankfully we did fine.

According to my climatology textbook, the lineup for names in 2010 includes such gems as earl, finoa, gaston, hermine, igor, otto, shary, virginie and walter...and that's only on the atlantic coast. =)

I got 20. Should have had Mitch because I read about its effects on Honduras in National Geographic. Also, I didn't get any of the recent ones other than Ike. You can see a relationship between whether a hurricane hits the US and how much media coverage it'll get...
