Not sure if this is overly obscure or not, but how about the Union XXV Corps? It was unique for the time period in that it was made entirely of African Americans, and also was the first group to occupy the Confederate capital.

Lee never opposed slavery. At best, he mouthed the "necessary evil" platitude, while continuing to enjoy the services of several dozen human beings he owned as property.
