| As for my analysis of the results, the USA, UK, Canada and Australia were to be expected - developed countries with a large population that are largely English-speaking. Note that Ireland and New Zealand don't appear due to their smaller populations. India is a poor country but with a growing middle class amongst a total population of over a billion, and this middle class has better knowledge of English and internet access. Germany, Italy and Spain are not too surprising. They all have large populations and are European countries, and in many European countries a large proportion of young people can understand English very well. The one that surprised me the most was Japan. Yeah, it does have the third largest population of all of these and high levels of internet access, but their language is much more different from English than German, Italian or Spanish. |
