An excellent quiz for an amazing voice artist. I would have made this quiz long ago if I knew how to make an audio quiz. One thing: Speedy's last name ends with an 's'.
May 9th, 2011 at 04:41 GMT
Also, don't you think this should be forced order?
May 9th, 2011 at 06:27 GMT
I agree with LTH, but the audio device thingy you're using (which I actually really like) doesn't tell you which # track is playing up on the display part--it only tells you on the list. So if it was forced order people would have to keep scrolling down on the list while it was playing to see what number was what. So it's kind of a tossup. Either way, it's top notch. (
Who is Speed Buggy
May 9th, 2011 at 12:05 GMT
@LTH- Forced order tends to make sound quizzes very difficult to maneuver and so I try to avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary. I'm going to hold off on that change and see what other comments there are on it. @druhutch- Speed Buggy ran from 1973 to 1975 (I was born in '75 so missed that original run) and then again on the USA Cartoon Express from '82-'90: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_Buggy.

Great quiz! One point - although Blanc took over, the voice of Elmer Fudd was originated by Arthur Q. Bryan and he is responsible for the "classic" voice of Fudd. Blanc's work was an imitation of Bryan's voice, so it's not really his. Maybe you could substitute Twiki from the Buck Rogers TV show. Or how about Daffy Duck?
May 9th, 2011 at 16:44 GMT
Wasn't expecting #13.
May 9th, 2011 at 16:56 GMT
@Koltrane- Excellent suggestion, and seriously, how did I leave out Daffy in the first place?!?! The change is made, though it will a few minutes before Soundcloud updates. @brenjonzz- He didn't talk much, but when he did (particularly in some later cartoons), Blanc provided his voice. Putting this quiz together made me realize how much I'd appreciate having a "Looney Tunes Channel". It would be on non-stop at my house!
May 9th, 2011 at 17:43 GMT
I thought it was easy but it was really fun at the same time.
May 9th, 2011 at 21:32 GMT
Excellent quiz! Mel Blanc was such an amazing talent.
May 10th, 2011 at 14:28 GMT
@hejman: The ending - perfect! Daws Butler next? Or the remarkable legend (still going!) June Foray. She's so versatile she makes Mel Blanc sound like an amateur.
May 10th, 2011 at 14:41 GMT
i'm so ashamed of myself for missing number 18. terrific quiz!
May 11th, 2011 at 00:33 GMT
"Prepare yourself for immediate disintegration!" Genius, Blanc was.
May 11th, 2011 at 17:18 GMT
@rockgolf: I'm hoping that Paul Frees is the next choice.
May 11th, 2011 at 17:40 GMT
@rockgolf- I went through June's characters last night and, while some of them are iconic (Rocky and Natasha, for example), there were only 12 or 13 that were well known and recognizable. Not really enough to do a whole quiz on her. I'll go through Frees and Butler tonight and see what I can come up with. Maybe I can combine them into a multi-voice quiz.
May 11th, 2011 at 17:53 GMT
I think you misspelled #14. If that's the way it is supposed to be spelled, maybe accept Henry?
May 11th, 2011 at 20:06 GMT
@cocky- That is the way it's spelled. The quiz also accepts just "chicken hawk."
May 11th, 2011 at 22:38 GMT
Speed Buggy! I remembered the cartoon, I just couldn't remember what it was called.
May 12th, 2011 at 01:44 GMT
Pete Puma was not voiced by Mel Blanc, but by radio legend Stan Freberg
May 12th, 2011 at 03:20 GMT
@dxman- Well, crud! Faulty source led me astray on that one. Pete's gone and has been replaced by one of my favorite Looney Tunes characters.
May 13th, 2011 at 16:16 GMT
One man did all those voices :o wow
May 14th, 2011 at 02:05 GMT
D0m: He wasn't called "The Man of a Thousand Voices", for nothing! GREAT call on Woody - Mel being the original (and best) voice of Woody was lost in Lantz's revisionist history. Mel had to stop doing Woody after signing an exclusive deal with WB, and for a long time, Woody was actually SILENT. It was hard doing this quiz and SMILING at the same time....
May 14th, 2011 at 02:27 GMT
Thanks, exapno. Before putting this quiz together I actually didn't know that Blanc had originated Woody's voice/laugh, having been familiar mostly with the Grace Stafford vocalization. Interesting to note that Billy West (Stimpy, Philip J. Fry) is actually the one to have done it most recently.
May 15th, 2011 at 11:52 GMT
Amazing quiz and very original idea. Mel Blanc sure was talented! It was really interesting to find out all the characters he did. I'd love to see expansions with other profilic voice actors like Rob Paulsen or Jim Cummings, maybe even those in videogames like Paul Eiding.
May 15th, 2011 at 18:21 GMT
How is anybody supposed to guess #8? Impossible!
May 15th, 2011 at 18:29 GMT
@TheBiscuit- You know, my original thought was that one was just too easy, but the good Captain didn't say a whole lot more and his yell is such that it's not quite as obvious as I originally feared it would be!

I believe he also did the voice of Flipper.
May 21st, 2011 at 17:19 GMT
A few of those were awfully close to other, perhaps less known characters. #6 could have been Benny the Cat ("Cat-Tails for Two") and I thought at first #16 was Frisky, the puppy that tormented Claude the Cat. Yeah, I think I watched way too many cartoons growing up.

Couldn't you accept Speedy Gonzalez? I realize his name was spelled Gonzales but in the real world most people spell it with a Z
May 21st, 2011 at 18:25 GMT
I agree with jonsap. Not accepting Gonzalez is ridiculous.
May 21st, 2011 at 18:37 GMT
'Gonzalez' is reasonable and is now accepted(in fact, when I first put the quiz together, I spelled it that way too).
May 21st, 2011 at 18:39 GMT
I love that only 36% of people got Captain Caveman despite the fact he's shouting 'Captain Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaveman!!'. :D
May 21st, 2011 at 18:48 GMT
aww i only got half. wish i did better mel blanc is such a great figure. i didnt know cecil turtle's name!!! i kept trying to put "tortoise" or "the tortoise" ay whatever. my fav thing about this quiz is how you can select the video clip, not waste time and scroll through to find the exact minute and second that the ones you didnt get on some stupid youtube bar. this was a great idea!
May 21st, 2011 at 18:48 GMT
Mel Blanc is an absolute legend. Thanks for making this quiz.
May 21st, 2011 at 18:51 GMT
@staarbux- I originally thought that the good Captain was going to be too easy and looked for other clips of him, but really he didn't talk a whole lot in that cartoon. In the end, unless you're familiar with Caveman, it's really quite hard to understand what he's saying. @juviejay- Did some good 'ol internet research. The noises of Flipper on TV were apparently a modified Kookaburra song!

If Wikipedia is to be believed Blanc did voice Fudd in one or two shorts, but the original and best known voice was Arthur Q. Bryan.
May 21st, 2011 at 19:48 GMT
Roadrunner? Does that mean he did the "BEEP! BEEP!"
May 21st, 2011 at 20:26 GMT
I bet hanging out with Mel Blanc was AWESOME.
May 21st, 2011 at 20:31 GMT
Legend - what a CV! His son might not agree though. He was named Noel. As in Noel Blanc. Oof!
