Many thanks to yippeeyappee who's original quiz (http://www.sporcle.com/games/yippeeyappee/magazinecovers) was the inspiration for this picture version. He was nice enough to suggest that I put this one together. Try his original- it has descriptions of all 40 covers.

I've used two 9-11 related covers here and I hope that Sporclers (particularly my fellow Americans) will understand that I have done so because for me those images continue to evoke a strong emotional response and so are the most memorable. In fact, I still have my copy of that Time magazine issue. It was not at all my intention to demean them in any way. As always, your comments are welcome.

We still have that TIME, too.
Great job, Your Honor.

A few are obvious (thank you), but many are pretty tricky. Good quiz.

Thanks kicking222 and googlebird. And thanks again for suggesting it, yippeeyappee. Also, my apologies to Mr. King, my 5th grade English teacher for my using "who's" instead "whose" in my first comment.

Masterful job of camouflaging/erasing the original copy logo. My only suggestion is that you require the answers in order. Too easy to just enter well known magazines names as is.

Well, crud- I meant to do that! I'll go change it. I removed the original names largely with Photoshop. I was surprised at how well some of them came out. A few of them required alteration at a pixel by pixel level which works, but is awfully time consuming.

Very nice quiz. BTW, every time I take a "photo" quiz, I can NEVER see the last pictures on the right (I always get the Sporcle top ten "Popular Trivia Games Today" list where the far right photos should appear). I have tried adjusting my page several different ways. Anybody know how to help me? It sucks to only be able to see 15 of 18, 20 of 24, etc. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

The covers are presented exactly as they were printed, except that I have Photoshopped the title of the magazine off of the cover.

The eyes of the Afghani woman make it the magazine cover that haunts me most. You present a great collection though...have a sequel in mind?

After you published this quiz, I came across National Geographic's follow-up to the Afghan girl on the cover of their magazine with the piercing eyes. I found it very interesting. Anyone interested should check it out.

Sharbat Gula, the Afghan Girl from National Geographic, has mesmerizing eyes. These beautiful, soul-piercing eyes can tell a story without words. Glad this image was included on this quiz!

Guess this quiz proves that magazines are really dying out. Considering Sporclers in general are a pretty savvy lot, I only got five out of eighteen and still winded up in the 61st percentile.

@barnztormre- I didn't pick the magazines, the American Society of Magazine Editors did. That being said, I was equally surprised that there was not a single SI cover in the top 40. @chikka2- Probably no sequel to this one since most of the remaining covers are repeats of these same magazines. @Koltrane (and others)- I wasn't familiar with Blue magazine either until I saw the ASME list. According to their list, the magazine began in 1997 and was (is?) dedicated to outdoor recreation.

@barnztormre & JGC: I think this list was more about the design and impact of the cover than the subject itself. I still remember that cover and I haven't bought an ESPN the Magazine in....10 years?

@kangaroey- There's only one Rolling Stone cover in the ASME list and I didn't use it on the quiz because (unlike the Dixie Chicks example where all the naughty parts are covered) the Rolling Stone cover clearly shows John Lennon's naked keester and this is a family web site after all!

I typed Harpers about 8 times, including on the correct photo. Bizarre that it did not come up. Just sayin'.... good quiz. Saul Steinberg's cover is the best ever.

@Commodore- that's because the magazine name is Harper's Bazaar and is shortened to Bazaar. It is published by Hearst. Harper's (with the Bazaar) is a political magazine published by the Harper's Magazine Foundation. One is fashion, one is politics/culture/arts, but they're definitely not the same thing.

Sorry, that last comment should say that Harper's (withOUT the Bazaar) is a published by the Harper's Magazine Foundation.

@Hejman-True, but given that it's a famous cover I'd doubt you get many complaints about Lennon's butt (or Demi Moore's for that matter). After all there is a "name that art" quiz on this site that has a statue of a topless women (Venus de Milo) on it.

@Hejman: I realized that. My comment was geared toward the American Society of Magazine Editors, not you personally. It's not as if any of them take these quizzes (that I'm aware of) but I was bewildered at SI's absence.

I agree with JGS: the Miracle On Ice cover was the only SI cover ever with no words. None were necessary. It was brilliant in its simplicity.

Wow, I scored a miserable 5 out of 18. The fact that I'm still in the 63rd percentile speaks to the decline of the magazine as a popular medium. R.I.P.
