All of the logos appear as I found them with the exception of those that had the team name, school name or initials on them. On most of those, I photoshopped the lettering off so as not to totally give away the answer. There are several schools who have former logos that they still use as "alternate" logos. I excluded those from consideration here.

Please accept USF for South Florida

Gah! I ALWAYS forget that one! It's added- thanks for catching that.

Yale is not a Division 1 college in football (they are Division 1-AA, now known as the FCS Division), but may have been back at the time the logo was used. If it was at the time the logo was used, you may want to add a note that the quiz includes schools that are or were Division 1.

Your lack on consistency baffles me. On a recently published quiz nicknames are allowed. On this quiz...they are not. This is the way I approve of though, but it is a bit frustrating.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 05:31 GMT
@amwoods13- Nothing in the title of the quiz refers to football or the FBS. Even if the quiz was football specific, Division 1 in football includes both the FBS and the FCS, so Yale (and the rest of the Ivy League) compete in D-1. @Pogues- I left off the nicknames on this quiz precisely because I agreed with your earlier comment. So, to review- I do it the way you don't like and you complain. I heed your complaint and do it the way you do like and you complain. I give up.

I think that USF should go back to that logo because its cooler than their current one.

i think Yale was incredibly misleading and unfair. This quiz looks incredibly similar to the recent college football logo quizzes, plus the other 19 schools happen to all be division-1 FBS prorgams so you really can't expect a person to all of a sudden say (wait, what about other sports). It's just too much of an unneccesary trick. I kept saying to myself, where have i seen a bulldog mascot in college footbal thats not georgia, never would've thought of yale.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 06:30 GMT
i mean big shocker at which one was picked correctly 8% of the time.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 12:01 GMT
@dommotime2- Unintended consequences, I assure you. I even changed the names of the quizzes and the wording of the instructions to try NOT to be tricky about it. I've now also added an explanatory note. It's worth noting, however, that Harvard has six national championships in golf, four in men's soccer, three in wrestling, one in hockey and one in women's lacrosse. They're a frequent participant in the Frozen Four and have been to three NCAA basketball tournaments. Of course, before there was an FBS, they also won 12 national championships in football. As a native of Buffalo, NY, I'll also point out that even being FCS as they are now, they're recently produced one heck of an NFL quarterback!

There was a few that I did no recognize, like michigan state and nebraska but I definitely learned. Thanks for the great quiz.

The ones I missed seem so obvious in retrospect. I like logos so it was cool to see some old ones I haven't seen before. No complaints here. Keep em coming. Maybe a retro helmet quiz?
Oct 11th, 2011 at 18:16 GMT
Northwestern should totally still use that logo, it's awesome.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 18:43 GMT
Actually, the retro helmet quiz has been done (and done well): http://www.sporcle.com/games/km272906/pre1985helmets

My vote for the one hardest to believe is Oregon State. And the date is recent. It's basically the old screaming indian Atlanta Braves logo except instead it's some beaver wearing a sailor's cap.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 18:50 GMT
The NC State logo appears to be a rip off of Peter and the Wolf or Whose Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf. The NW logo is the one I'd most like to have on my wall just for people to ask what the hell it is. The coolest one for me is by far the Army one.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 18:52 GMT
And then there are the last two. What the hell do those even represent? The MSU one looks like some vagabond troll. And the Nebraska one, I mean, what is he? He has a pennant and a program and a pin. Sweet.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 18:56 GMT
Finally, I too thought the Yale one was a bit out of place. Not that it wasn't "fair" or something like that. The directions up top are very clear. But it does happen to be the only non-FBS school. It's a little like having a quiz of "pro sports logos" with 19 of the 20 being Big Four American sports franchises, and then 1 of them being a cricket club or something like that.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 20:32 GMT
The inclusion of Yale was completely deceptive. Obviously, there's nothing in the title or description excluding it but, given this quiz's similarity to it's exclusively FBS published counterpart quiz and the fact that every other school in this quiz is FBS, it is seems like some kind of underhanded trick to include it here.
Oct 11th, 2011 at 21:55 GMT
Ok, I give. Apparently even when I specifically state in a note that there is an FCS school in the quiz, it's still 'completely deceptive.' Since the only thing more I could have done would have been to say in the note, "The answer to #9 is Yale", I've simply removed it and replaced it with an FBS school. I hope it makes the quiz more fun and playable- enjoy!
Oct 12th, 2011 at 02:30 GMT
I'd love to see the old Memphis State logo pre-jumping tiger...or as my dad loves to call it the "Roaring Kitty"
Oct 12th, 2011 at 03:34 GMT
In fairness, I didn't see any note.
Oct 12th, 2011 at 04:40 GMT
No problem, Wes. It was there, but I removed it after switching out Yale. Thanks for the feedback!
Oct 12th, 2011 at 11:28 GMT
That's a shame that you had to take out Yale. I got it because I thought of schools related to a bulldog. I guessed I just used logic.
Oct 12th, 2011 at 12:58 GMT
Why does the Iowa Hawkeye have a T on its shirt (or is it an I)? That completely threw me. Another great quiz, by the way.
Oct 12th, 2011 at 14:51 GMT
@MSUKent- I think that's an 'I' but the bottom is obscured by the position of his body.
Oct 12th, 2011 at 19:47 GMT
Love these old logos. I remember watching an old UF v. UT game from the 90's (Peyton Manning's last game vs. Florida, it was in the Swamp), and CBS used that logo for the game intros. Very cool, and it actually explains why their nickname is the Volunteers, something that I think is lost now. Also appreciate seeing the old Gator logo here. Cool stuff.

That Northwestern logo is really the cat's pajamas. No, really, it looks like a cat in pajamas.
Nov 30th, 2012 at 19:18 GMT
Just how was I supposed to get the first one?
Nov 30th, 2012 at 20:22 GMT
Crushed that Seton Hall's old Pirate isn't on here. So much better than that Mario Bros. looking thing they've got now. Guess we need a football team though...

Could have sworn the Oregon State one was Minnesota (Golden Gophers).
Nov 30th, 2012 at 20:47 GMT
I put UF and University of Florida for Florida. Not good enough?
Nov 30th, 2012 at 20:57 GMT
@pirate98- I was all excited to mention that there is a Former College Logos II but then I remembered that I didn't put Seton Hall in that one either. If there's enough demand to make a third edition, I'll put it in there. @Montoor- Sporcle standard is to accept "Florida" but I've added "University of Florida" as well.
Nov 30th, 2012 at 21:09 GMT
I loved the quiz. Wish you didn't have to succomb to pressure and take out Yale, though.
Nov 30th, 2012 at 22:00 GMT
That Northwestern logo is by far one of the creepiest and weirdest looking sports logos I have ever seen.
Nov 30th, 2012 at 22:14 GMT
NC State Lascivious Wolves? And their battle call is "Aaooooouuugah!" like in every Looney Tunes cartoon ever?
Nov 30th, 2012 at 22:56 GMT
At least Northwestern's is conceivably (sort of) a wildcat. What the hell does Michigan State's have to do with Spartans?
Nov 30th, 2012 at 23:13 GMT
I don't want to know what the turtle is doing to that M... also, Tennessee's old logo was awesome, but it was probably politically incorrect.

Game of the day icon: Weber State. Go wildcats!
Dec 1st, 2012 at 00:28 GMT
Was hoping for DePaul as normal, but NU's creepy wildcat more than makes up for it.
