These are all images of actual Playbill covers. A few tricks of photo manipulation have just been used to remove the name of the musical from the cover.

Excellent quiz. Lots of room for sequels.

Exactly what googlebird said!
Aug 1st, 2010 at 04:49 GMT
Very, very well done. You chose musicals where we have a fighting chance of getting the right answer, even if we haven't actually seen the play. This quiz deserves a front-page cover appearance of its own.

For some reason not all the pictures show on my computer, any ideas how to fix this?

Great quiz! Worth nominating.

@Hejman Pretty pretty please, move this to Entertainment, so I can make it an editor's pick. For some reason, all of broadway is in my bailiwick.

Will do Sprout. @Musicalfan- the note at the top of the quiz suggests that you hit F11 on your keyboard to maximize the screen. Have you tried that?

Love it... BUT... no Sondheim?
Aug 1st, 2010 at 23:08 GMT
@fortunateizzi- And at his 80th birthday celebration no less! I love Sondheim, but there were two limitations here. One, I had to be able to find a decent image of the Playbill cover for the show on the net. Two, it had to be a cover that I could remove the name of the show from without destroying the image or making it impossible to get (thus no 'Rent', for example, which was just a black blob without the letters). Getting back to Sondheim, there were two different "Into the Woods" Playbill covers that I could find, but both have the name of the show so integrated into the cover that it was impossible to remove them.

I was going to mention the lack of Sondheim, but I do understand the restriction. I'll see if I can find a suitable playbill cover on the net and I'll send it to you. You know, in case you make a sequel or something ;)

Sondheim problem solved! (As is my discomfort at having two Disney movie-to-musicals in the original version.) In the process, I learned how to use a new Photoshop tool as well. If I keep this up, I'll be working in BP's PR department soon...

Elphaba from Wicked got her name from the phonetic pronunciation of the initials of L. Frank Baum who wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. El-pha-ba.

Great quiz. Only quibble: yellow text on a white background is always hard to read.

I don't know anything about musicals, but I thought for sure that the last one was Alice in Wonderland.

i only wish some of the playbill images were larger, a lot were tough to see.
Aug 5th, 2010 at 04:57 GMT
For some reason I can't see the archived comments. When I click on "show them", it zooms back to the top of the page, but won't show them.

I agree with dje; #12 was especially hard to make out (#23 was also, but it's iconic enough to make out without the details). That said, great idea for a quiz.

I like the feature that shows the picture next to where you type it... very convenient :) Great quiz!
Aug 5th, 2010 at 05:50 GMT
I love it too caligal14. The challenge with picture quizzes has always been to make the images large enough to solve but not so large that there's too much scrolling up and down in order to answer. Putting the image right next to the answer blank really helps there. You can thank the Sporcle admins for coming up with that one. In this quiz, however, I think the smaller size adds to the challenge of recognizing them by making many of them a bit less obvious. Trying to remove all the names from the covers was a challenge but quite fun- especially for Forum, where the name was all through the column sections.

The "Dreamgirls" girls don't look black, therefore I missed it.

"Defying Gravity" and "One Day More" are two of the best closing songs of a first act ever. Oh, and awesome quiz.
Aug 5th, 2010 at 07:07 GMT
missed jesus christ superstar even tho i saw the show. although that playbill doesn't really give it away
Aug 5th, 2010 at 08:27 GMT
Visually stunning to see all that great cover art at one time; beautifully crafted quiz
Aug 5th, 2010 at 12:03 GMT
Really fun quiz! good job!! I can't wait for part 2!
Aug 5th, 2010 at 12:19 GMT
wholover: i agree about Defying Gravity. Ive seen wicked 6 times now, and it still gives me chills every time. Great quiz!
Aug 5th, 2010 at 12:20 GMT
I literally got every other one. Weird.
Aug 5th, 2010 at 12:34 GMT
I recently looked at my old program from the Dick Van Dyke revival of "The Music Man" and was surprised to see that the role of Winthrop (played by little Ronnie Howard in the movie) was performed by an 11-year old Christian Slater!

Amazingly, I only have seen a Broadway show once and it just happened too be one of these (Producers). I enjoyed this quiz regardless of how badly I did.

Fun to take! Thanks!

No American Idiot?

Please keep in mind that if you want the images to be larger- you can do that! On Firefox and Internet Explorer there is a drop-down menu on the top left that says "View". IE lets you zoom by percentage, Firefox lets you do it by hitting control+. I seem to recall that Chrome has a similar menu on the top right. I've only used Safari a few times but I would be surprised if it doesn't have the same feature. Using Firefox and IE this morning I was able to zoom the images so large that they took up the entire screen. So, if you'd like the images to be larger, by all means go ahead and make them larger!
Aug 5th, 2010 at 13:40 GMT
DOH! I literally typed in "A Funny Thing Happened on my way to the..." and then decided that was wrong! I did OK for someone who has seen only 3 plays.
Aug 5th, 2010 at 13:59 GMT
I can't believe I didn't get my single favourite musical (A Funny Thing...) Maybe I've just never seen that playbill for it? Great execution of a simple idea.
Aug 5th, 2010 at 14:06 GMT
@devilsfan15 - I did the same thing. I looked at it and said "oh forum?" and then I talked myself out of it. Just goes to show that first instincts are usually right. :)
Aug 5th, 2010 at 14:10 GMT
oh and Hejman, thanks for accepting the usual shortenings of the names (like "Phantom" and "Forum") but could you accept "Fiddler" for "Fiddler on the Roof"? I know it's nit-picking, but it would be consistent (as I'm not sure of too many people who call it it's full name). Thanks!
Aug 5th, 2010 at 14:13 GMT
Bah! The three I missed (the bottom 3) I guessed on other playbills...lol. Great quiz!
