The NFL draft has been conducted every year since 1936. From 1961 to 1966 the NFL and AFL conducted separate drafts. Each #1 pick from that period is included here.

Because the first pick is generally awarded to the team that has the worst record from the prior season, I was curious to see who had the most. The challenge was to prevent this from being a quiz where you just named all the NFL teams. I've tried to avoid that by limiting the number of answers and making it a 1:00 minute quiz.

Also, from 1947 to 1958 the first pick was a rotating bonus pick. Every active NFL team got a #1 pick in that time period.

nice quiz... definitely quick but it needs to be that way. i was not surprised at most but was very surprised at others. i put in the teams that have been consistently bad in my lifetime.

@alleycat9- Frankly, that's exactly what I was hoping people would do. Some of the teams on this list have been very good over the last generation, but were historically bad prior to that. I hope this is a fun little quiz for draft day. I know typing 15 teams in one minute is a bit of challenge in and of itself, but just like the teams in the draft, you're on the clock.

I feel like 2 minutes would probably be enough for some people to name all the NFL teams, but I also didn't have enough time with 1 minute, so who knows.
Apr 22nd, 2010 at 20:59 GMT
I think you have to leave it at one minute. Personally, I can type all the teams in the league in one minutes. I tried to attack it logically before settling back on this, but if you increase the time it'll definitely open it up to a lot of people who can just type all the teams.

I like the time right now, whatever it is. Also, the Redskins aren't on this list and are one of the oldest franchises. (Please don't vote down, I'm just supporting my team in their time of need, 4-12 is nothing to be proud of)

This type of quiz can't be improved - it is what it is - so it's hard to complain. All in all not a very fulfilling quiz because half the teams on this quiz have just been around 2,3 4 times longer than others, despite better all-time records
Apr 25th, 2010 at 19:47 GMT
@SowCrates, I had considered using instead using just the picks since the AFL was formed in 1960 or since the merger in 1970, but in the end decided that knowing which teams had been around longer and which had been bad in the past was part of what made the quiz challenging.

cool quiz. I did a similar one awhile back including all the leagues: http://www.sporcle.com/games/chrisofspades/most_first_picks

Great quiz, chrisofspades. I saw yours in the search when I was putting this together, but hoped this was different enough not to encroach on your territory. Hope you enjoyed the time-element challenge to this one.

Pretty weird how the cowboys, steelers, 49ers and patriots are on here. Seeing as how they all have won a lot of super bowls. But i guess its true that every team has its down years

lol i like the picture: Matt Millen. nice quiz

I guessed the Patriots because they always seem to have finagled a high draft pick with trades and such. When I saw this quiz, I thought...oh the Cardinals will be a great guess for this quiz! Which one did I miss? Cardinals. *headslap*

Am I wrong, or didn't the Texans draft David Carr #1 overall? Also, neither the Chargers or the Giants are on here, so who are you giving credit for Eli Manning?
May 2nd, 2011 at 01:37 GMT
@djangosmalls- I think you've misunderstood the nature of the quiz. The Texans did indeed draft David Carr #1 overall in 2002 and they also had the #1 overall pick in 2006 (Mario Williams), but that only gives them two, so they don't make this list of teams that have had the MOST. Eli Manning was drafted #1 overall by the chargers in 2004, but that's the only time the Chargers have ever had the #1 overall pick, so again, they don't make the list. As for the Giants, they had the #1 overall pick in 1951 and 1965, again, not enough to be among the teams with the MOST.

The cyclical nature of the game, as well as how long a team has been around, have a huge impact on this list. Colts had the most wins over the past decade, but that's largely thanks to their last #1 pick. And yet they lead, partially because of a long funk in the 80's/90's (Plus they traded UP to get Jeff George! artifically inflating their total. of course one years they had the first TWO picks, neither of which panned out, which should probably count as a bonus half point or something.) and the fact that they've been around forever compared to the Bucs, Texans, Seahawks, Saints (a team that was dreadful for years and years), etc. same for the Steelers--a traditional powerhouse but they've been aorund a long time. Surprised the Lions are so low, but that too is generally a recent thing and they had a long proud tradition before (cough) Matt Millen.

wow, the Aints didn't appear
Apr 10th, 2012 at 00:57 GMT
@MIKEYZ08 but this list includes draft picks from all the way back to 1936, and those teams were some of the first teams created, so they had an unfair "advantage" in this quiz.
May 24th, 2012 at 18:43 GMT
NOT enough time!
May 25th, 2012 at 02:55 GMT
The Cardinals are on here, but haven't even had a first overall pick since King Hill in 1958!
