Each of these sound effects are lifted directly from the movies that are the correct answers. That being said, it may be that some are very similar- so similar in fact that an alternate answer should be accepted. If you think that's the case, please leave a comment and let me know so I can consider adding other answers.

Also, just a note: my rule in putting this together was that music and speech did not count as sound effects, thus John Williams' memorable music cues in Jaws and Close Encounters aren't included. There are a few clues in here that include speech, but the speech is either computer generated, computer modified or artificially amplified in some way, thus rendering it a sound effect.

Very challenging! I didn't do so well. On the years, instead of doing a range, how about just noting the year of the first film? Star Wars first year should be 1977 and LOTR should be 2001-2003. Also, The Silence of the Lambs came out in 1991.

Yeah, I just noticed that LTH - not sure where 1966 came from. I'm off to fix it. Do you think putting just the first year makes it easier or harder?

I'd say it doesn't change the difficulty. It would just make the third column more streamline.

I got a few lucky guesses based on the year and on things I expected to be on the quiz, but I like the idea. Much love for the coconut sound effect. Did you mean 2005 rather than 2009 for Star Wars?

No sound effects clue would be complete without Python's coconuts. I've changed the date scheme for a couple of reasons, not least among them that I am apparently unable to enter the correct dates. They should (hopefully) all be good now.

Fair point yankee00, which is why I included "unique". And the cars clue has nothing to do with the car starting, it's the sound of Guido's incredibly fast pit stop that is 'unique' to that film.

I liked it. I think I would lose the years. I got wizard of oz purely on the year but couldn't place the f/x at all. What on earth is the silence of the lambs f/x? I nearly guessed it based on the year but really couldn't place it so didn't bother.

AdamL- The Silence of the Lambs one is, in my opinion the hardest one on here- it's the noise that Anthony Hopkins makes after saying he ate the man's liver (with some fava beans and a nice Chianti). All in all, the stats on this quiz show that it turned out to be much harder than I thought it was going to be, which leads me to think that the added help from the years should probably stay.

4/5. Would have been 5/5 if you had given an explanation of what each sound was. I got Wizard of Oz right just by looking at the date. I have no idea what that sound was.

Great, great suggestion MacCivEngMgmt. I'm kicking myself for not doing it originally. The info has been edited so that each of the answer spaces now also lists what the sound effect is.

No Wilhelm Scream? :) Regardless, this was a fun quiz. I was surprised at how many I got.

Thanks Kyusil. The urge to use the Wilhelm Screem was nearly overwhelming, but alas, there is nothing unique or specific about it- it's been in too many movies to count. (See: http://www.hollywoodlostandfound.net/wilhelm/)

Maybe I haven't seen it in a while, but I think the silence of the lamb sound is just a bad clip, it doesn't sound like the Lector slurp at all (at least on my computer, I even youtubed it just to make sure). Other than that this is a great quiz

Igon- the Lecter clip is copied directly from the movie and is not altered in any way. I thought it was definitely the hardest of the bunch, though I'm surprised to see that there are three others below it.

Awesome quiz! I'll remember the sound effects from War of the Worlds & Godzilla until the day I die. All those Saturday afternoons spent watching old monster movies with my dad really paid off.

Very fun and challenging quiz, can't believe I wasn't able to recognize the Nazgul scream and Star Trek beaming sounds!

I really enjoyed this quiz. I am kicking myself for not getting Ghostbusters cause I listened to that effect a few times and was like, "I know this." And I couldn't place the "Silence" one but after seeing what it was from I was like "duh." Anyway, nice job. Bet it took forever.
