@thedpr: California may have had close to the same level of Spanish-speakers when they were admitted. Look how many of the cities have Spanish names. Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, La Jolla, San Jose....
And to add to Hejman's point, the only reason Alaska and Hawaii were granted statehood was because they balanced each other politically. For the most part, Alaska is solid Republican and Hawaii solidly Democratic. There's nothing to balance that for Puerto Rico. (And if you're Republican, don't go looking to Canada - in a recent pre-election poll, over 85% of Canadians said they would vote Obama over Romney if they had that choice.) |
