I loved your method of giving hints through bonus answers. Many quizzes could use this method. Great quiz!

Thanks jaspa- ironically, it came to me because I can't spell Gandhi, which, of course, was clearly proven by the fact that I then spelled it wrong when I first posted the quiz. The problem with the method is that you have to guess where people are going to make mistakes. If anyone has any other suggestions in that realm, I'd be happy to hear them.

RebeccaAMax, Converge and thefeintinggoat- thanks so much for the kind comments and the nominations. This one was fun to put together. I was originally going to call it "Great Speeches" or something of the sort, but then realized that there are some on here that aren't so great. Glad you liked it though.

It's interesting--I thought the dates were a complete giveaway for the first five or six (I went ahead and typed in names well before the clips started), but were invaluable hints for some of the later ones. Some of the clips are also perhaps long--how many people needed anything after "I have a dream"?--but it's nice to hear the whole thing, I suppose.

It is traditional in Sporcle to put the most common mispellings as alternates, rather than as bonus answers making fun of the troubled speller. Cronkite and Ed Sullivan are not significant historical figures, and won't be recognized outside the US. I had trouble making out what Gandhi and Einstein were saying. Those clips were a little soft. Great quiz!

I agree, Tommy_C that's it is traditional to take acceptable alternate spellings, but not misspellings. I intended these to be good natured hints and certainly didn't mean to make fun of anyone. I'm the worst offender when it comes to spelling (see the first and second comments above). I included Cronkite because the JFK assassination was a significant event and there are no other even remotely recognizable sound clips. Sullivan's clip I thought would be recognizable to those in the UK and is included as a bit of a lighter note at the end. I considered accepting "JFK assassination" for the Cronkite clip. I tried hard to make the quiz as international as possible, even sacrificing quality on a few clips in order to include them. The feedback from everyone has been great and is much appreciated. Thanks for all the comments.

Very nicely done! Thanks for taking the time to put this one together. I appreciated the "wrong prime minister--keep trying" hint, although I never did get that one. Nominated, too.

What, no leap April? Thanks for catching that sportsbros229. The explosion aboard Apollo 13 actually happened on 4/11/70- just a typo on my part. Let me go fix that now...

Very nice quiz. I think Cronkite and Ed Sullivan are fine internationally speaking. I had no idea about Amelia Earheart. The clip of Einstein may be a little longer, as it's very hard to hear what he's actually saying, so I had no clue on where to look for the answer. I loved the hints - tells you at least you're on the right track. Maybe you can also put one in for entering "Apollo 13"?

Excellent and delightful, add another nomination. It's amazing how very familiar most of these are, even the ones before my time. The hardest were those used in well-known movies - Gandhi sounds nothing like Kingsley, and I just couldn't get past Hanks to Lovell.

Thanks Lenard and Confused, and the nominations are much appreciated. I don't believe, though, that Sporcle has ever put an audio quiz on the main page. Perhaps I've just missed it. Grateful for the good feedback though and hope to put a sequel together soon.

I loved it a lot and am totally nominating it. Thanks for the effort, it is very much appreciated. For most Germans Cronkite and Sullivan will be next to impossible to get, but that doesn't bother me at all because you really went out of your way to include non-Americans, too. And I loved the Apollo 13 hint :) Also, I'm with the people who think the dates should be hidden. There are very clear hints in almost every clip and IMO it would be far more fun to actually need them.

Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out a way to get the user contributed game matrix to allow me to simultaneously do bonus answers (or in this case bonus clues) and hide the third column. I had to choose then between showing the dates or leaving them off all together. I thought that on some of the more obscure voices the dates would be necessary, so I decided to leave the date column. I'd love to hear other thoughts on that.

I suspect the main reason audio quizzes haven't made the front page is concern over possible copyright. But these speeches are all public domain. I'd bet it gets to the front page within a week. I've nominated it too.

hejman, great work! Harry Truman has been the subject of many a Sporcle debate regarding his middle name. Even though it doesn't stand for anything, there should be a dot after the S because that's how he signed it.

Thanks rockgolf- coming from someone with 41 published quizzes, that means a lot. LTH- thanks for the kudos and the Truman clarification. I remembered that the debate had occurred, but couldn't remember what the accepted result was. Punctuation consternation gives me agitation. I had also suspected copyright concerns were at play, though the same concerns would apply to, say, pictures of Simpsons characters and other published picture quizzes. It all makes me wish I had given closer attention to my copyright classes in law school!

I agree with rockgolf. This is masterfully done, and seeing how the speeches are in fact all public domain, I see no reason why Sporcle wouldn't publish it. It looks as if my sound quiz won't be published due to copyright reasons, but I'll be shocked if they don't publish yours.
