It was not my intention here to be disrespectful in any way. Each of these people is rightfully known for their accomplishments in life and, either because of their instructions or their family's wishes, those accomplishments are, in some way, memorialized on their tombstones. It is my intention to celebrate their accomplishments (or in some cases their humor) by including them here.

I don't find this disrespectful at all. Very hard, yes. Very interesting, yes. Good quiz, yes. But not disrespectful.

Thanks, hscer. Straying into death and final resting places had me worried on this one. It is definitely a bit on the hard side, but I had a limited range to work with. Most tombstones are just a name and two dates. It was interesting to see who chose to put something unique on their grave marker.

Hard is just fine, and I don't see it as disrespectful at all. If someone chooses to put a joke on their tombstone, how is it disrespectful to laugh? If someone puts a heartfelt message, how is it disrespectful to read it? Excellent quiz.

Interesting quiz. I burned a lot of time trying different cowboys and spelling names wrong. I didn't do very well, but I love to see something different.

I was hoping for S = k log W, which I think is the most awesome tombstone ever.

@sabresfan- It's awesomeness is undeniable, but how many people really know who Ludwig Boltzmann is?

The best tombstone ever belongs to Spike Milligan, whose epitaph reads: "I told you I was ill"

If you can read Cyrillic, #7 is pretty easy. I would not have gotten it otherwise. Nice job overall.

How did you divide up the pictures like that? Also, @cocky: it's a cenotaph dedicated to her. Thomas Paine isn't buried in his tomb, either; someone stole his bones and the ship they were on sank in the Atlantic ocean

I'll repeat what I said at the outset: It was not my intention here to be disrespectful in any way. Each of these people is rightfully known for their accomplishments in life and, either because of their instructions or their family's wishes, those accomplishments are, in some way, memorialized on their tombstones. It is my intention to celebrate their accomplishments (or in some cases their humor) by including them here. The only modifications I've made to these images is to remove names where they were visible.

Remember also that all browsers have a zoom function (control++ in Firefox, control+ in Internet Explorer, an upper right drop-down menu in Chrome) if your monitor size or vision require the pictures to be larger.

@tomstar86- the site these images are from is an American site with predominantly American contributors. That being said, I made a concerted effort to include non-Americans (there are 4) in the quiz. The challenge was to find gravestones that said something about the person other than just their name and dates of birth and death and most of them have that information only.

The order I entered answers made it so the last two I put in were Locke and Key. I liked that.

@tomstar86: Oh please! Six of these (Paine, Milton, Gagarin, King, Locke, and Earhart) are internationally known to anyone who went to high school. Two more (Wilder, Sinatra) are internationally known to anyone who has watched an old movie in the last fifty years.

I'm surprised that Locke has such an American tombstone. It was obviously made well after his death, so you have to wonder whether they just got rid of his old tombstone, or if this is just some other memorial stone in the area and not his actual tombstone.

i'd be interested to see a quiz with tombstones that have maybe little or no blurb, but we'd have to guess the person by death/birth date with some really obvious ones (for example, 10/30/1735-7/4/1826 would be John Adams, and a lot of people know that he died on the 4th of july).

Lots of scope for a sequel. I'd like to see one with Spike Milligan included. "I told you there was something wrong with me" is probably one of the best epitaphs!

@dje: Only concern with that is that the dates must be in full, as in have the month spelled out (at least to 3 letters) otherwise confusion over mm/dd/yyyy or dd/mm/yyyy could occur.

Tough but fun. Quite a bit of space related was odd but overall a good variety. I missed a few that looking back on made sense. That's fun. I hope there is a part II.
