@Hejman: Hope I don't get a reputation around here… last month I had to urge @rockgolf to spell-check the 1940 loser in his quiz… your turn now!

'Pinkney' should be changed to 'Pinckney' and 'Wilkie' should be changed to 'Willkie'

There should only be one 's' in 'candidates.' Also, you might want to consider expanding this...after all, if Thurmond is in it, George Wallace should probably be in it as well, if Breckinridge is in, then maybe Bell and Douglas, etc, etc.

That's what I get for rushing to get the names in! @tulliuscicero- The quiz inclues; a. Every second place finisher who did not previously or subsequently win an election, and; b. The two major 3rd party candidates of the recent 60+ years. I included Thurmond and Perot to balance the field of images at 6x6.

@tulliuscicero- Thanks for correcting my choice of words. What I meant to say was every second place finisher who did not hold the office of President.

So you're presuming that whoever takes second place in November 2012 will be someone who did not hold the office of President? (I mean, so am I, but just to be clear about it.)

Not at all, Tahnan. If Obama wins then Romney can join the list. If Romney wins then I can remove the mystery man and reset the images to a 7x5 grid (or just change the mystery man's date to 2016).

Why does Strom Thurmond count as a major 3rd party candidate of the last 60 years, but George Wallace does not? Wallace got more electoral votes and a much higher share of the popular vote than Thurmond did.

Well, I could have included John Anderson or Robert LaFollette or Ralph Nader or any number of other 19th C. minor candidates (John Bell, anyone?). In the end, an image quiz has to be limited in the number of images it has or else the images end up being tiny and unsolvable because you can't see who/what's in them. As such, I had to make some choices about who got included. I picked Thurmond and Perot for reasons I've already mentioned and because I thought they would be recognizable and make the quiz more playable than 19th C. third party candidates (or Wallace or Anderson, for that matter).

George Wallace in 1968 is much more recognizable than Thurmond in 1948, who doesn't look anything like the very, very old man most of us are familiar with. And he was a a much, much more successful third party candidate. There's just really no good reason to include Thurmond rather than Wallace.

If Perot is in there then George Wallace should def. be added. Afterall he did win states in 1968 and Perot didn't in 92.

This isn't EVERY loser from a Presidential election, but rather only those who finished second without previously or subsequently holding the office. (With a couple of major 3rd partiers thrown in to round out the grid of images.) The fact that they are in chronological order gives an oddly satisfying sense of color balance between paintings and the advent of color film. We could be adding an image on Tuesday or not. And since I live in Ohio, I get to see 9,748 more television commercials in the next three days trying to convince me which way to vote!

As a non-American I'm not being too harsh on myself for only getting 6. But is it wrong that I only know Dukakis from watching 'Donnie Darko'?

Damn if Davis doesn't look a LOT like Wilson, good thing he wasn't running about a decade earlier. Mondale looks awful in that pic. I've seen it before, but he looks like a member of the Politburo.

I keep forgetting that Willkie has 2 l's in his name. Other than that I drew a blank on 3 of the early ones, at least one of whom I should have remembered. Great quiz.

I only knew the ones from my lifetime, Dewey because of the "Dewey defeats Truman" picture, and Mondale because my dad told me about a campaign button that said "Vote for Wallie and the Beav"

@cirquedeepicness- John C. BreckInridge died in 1875. The BreckEnridge ski resort opened in 1961. So I'm going to go with no on that one.
