	Whether it is truly the opposite or not is a matter of debate, I think sweet and savoury are more like opposites, but the common saying is sweet and sour so in light of that I think it is a fair answer.

	@traineediplomat- According to Webster: Jail, noun, "A place of confinement for persons held in lawful custody." Gaol, noun, "Old English variant of jail." I've worked in the American criminal justice system for 14 years and I've never seen the word "gaol" used.

	@Waterice_Man- I've been obtuse, please forgive me. My point was not that the word is never used, but that the word is not used in modern parlance. Even in the UK- take for example this story from 'The Guardian' about overpopulation in 'jails in England': http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/aug/13/ukcrime.prisonsandprobation or this BBC article about 'jails in England and Wales.' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14583562

	I guess not everyone does crossword puzzles. Gaol is a common word in those as are some of the archaic words sometimes used here. Which is used would depend on who wrote the quiz, no?

	I think it would be more appropriate to state that jail is the area where people are held before conviction. In the United States at least, many people who are convicted in a trial go to prison.

	Jail is also the place where small sentences are served. Seven days in jail. Gaol really wouldn't work in the word ladder. Don't these Brits ever play Monopoly? Boardwalk is Mayfair on the UK board, but jail is still jail.

	Hejman's right: Gaol is almost an obsolete spelling here in the UK, and the alternative has been more prevalent throughout my long-ish life. Citing the "Grauniad" as a source for spellings may not be such a sound strategy, however...
