too easy if it isnt answer in order...
Oct 5th, 2010 at 03:47 GMT
Good point, I'll make that change.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 04:10 GMT
I guess I got in under the buzzer, since some of my answers were random guesses. I sure didn't see the curly tail on the pig until it was too late. Fun quiz.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 04:22 GMT
one slight mistake, you said number 20 is a penguin, its clearly a snipe.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 04:28 GMT
Just for you, thevelocirapper, there's now a bonus answer if you try snipe on #20.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 04:31 GMT
@thevelocirapper, I think you mean Kevin (which should also be a bonus)
Oct 5th, 2010 at 06:51 GMT
Lack of scale makes it too difficult.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 09:09 GMT
i love that more people are getting frog than are getting human
Oct 5th, 2010 at 11:34 GMT
I could've sworn that 16 was the loch ness monster.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 12:52 GMT
@RS89- I used the images out of scale for two reasons. First, I thought it made what was otherwise a pretty easy quiz a bit more challenging and entertaining. Second, I was fearful that if I made the images to scale the smaller animals like the cat, snake and frog would be so small as compared to the elephant, cow, giraffe, etc. that they would be impossible to discern. The percentages in the results suggest that it's working so far, but I'm always happy to have more feedback on quizzes.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 13:32 GMT
I thought the Sea Lion was by far the hardest. Really fun quiz though. A couple of them that I was having trouble with (like the pig and the camel), I just squinted and then I could tell what they were.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 14:43 GMT
12% of people missed "human"?
Oct 5th, 2010 at 15:20 GMT
@kidcanada- Some of that may be because of what they're typing in. I tried to anticipate the different ways that people would respond. For the human skeleton the quiz accepts: Human/Man/Person/Woman/Homo Sapien/Human Being. For cow it takes: Cow/Steer/Bull/Bovine/Cattle. If anyone comes across an alternate answer that they think should also be accepted, please let me know.
Oct 5th, 2010 at 15:50 GMT
wow the answer to number 7 took so many tries until i figured it out! and 16 definitely looks prehistoric!
Oct 5th, 2010 at 18:37 GMT
How can some not get human ? Don't they know how they look like ?
Oct 5th, 2010 at 19:41 GMT
Congratulations, a very excellent quiz!
Oct 5th, 2010 at 20:52 GMT
I think people are missing human just because it's on the bottom, and they give up before they get there. At least I hope that's the reason!
Oct 5th, 2010 at 21:50 GMT
Excellent quiz. I suggest using some type of scale so the chimpanzee doesn't look bigger than the gorilla, etc.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 00:26 GMT
Damn, I typed in "seal", and when that didn't work, I just moved on. "Sea Lion" never even came to mind. D'oh. Cool quiz, though.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 01:30 GMT
I think you should accept 'seal' for 'sea lion'. They're both pinnipeds, and the skeleton of all the pinnipeds are virtually indistinguishable - the main difference being the ears, which don't show up on the skeleton.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 01:34 GMT
Similarly for #9, you could accept 'alligator' because unless you could get a close up view of its mouth and teeth, both the croc and the gator have indistinguishable skeletons.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 01:40 GMT
@hellofromUK- My initial inclination was to accept 'seal' as an alternate answer. However, they do have different bone structure in the their flippers (which, when I looked at a seal skeleton was visible). Also, if I allow 'seal' then it would always trigger the answer "sea lion" before it was typed, thereby never allowing anyone to type the correct answer. I also placed it next to the lion as a bit of a nudge in the right direction. I do agree with you on the gator, though and will add that as an alternate.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 01:56 GMT
I put human, but maybe accept "people" because there are 2 of them.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 02:31 GMT
Thanks, lalalala- I'll add that.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 03:43 GMT
Very interesting, fun quiz.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 13:30 GMT
I totally tried plesiosaur for the dolphin.
Oct 6th, 2010 at 19:57 GMT
Lolz, I tried plesiosaur, too, ha ha. Fantastic quiz, so much fun!!
Oct 9th, 2010 at 16:06 GMT
Should accept seal for sea lion
Oct 9th, 2010 at 17:22 GMT
@RedSox34- please see my comment, above, explaining why they are not the same animal and why I can't accept "seal" for "sea lion."
Oct 11th, 2010 at 12:41 GMT
Good fun, the goat completely fooled me, thought it was an antelope. I think it should accept seal for sea lion as well. A sea lion is a type of (eared) seal, and none of the other answers are so specific.
Oct 13th, 2010 at 21:28 GMT
Fantastic quiz. Sorry, I agree with the various posters, I think seal should be allowed. I see what you're saying, but on a picture of that detail there's really not much between them. On the other hand, after failing with seal it's a fairly obvious place to guess next I suppose. Also, is there much difference between big cat skeletons? Would it be reasonable to allow tiger for 6?
Oct 13th, 2010 at 23:29 GMT
I give. Seal is now accepted. I hadn't considered that the sea lion is a typed of eared seal, but it certainly is and so that makes the answer reasonable. I think, chris_t, that people will move quickly from tiger to lion when tiger is not accepted and since that is not a tiger, I'm going to refrain from adding it.

Well that's my favorite quiz yet just for the sheer novelty of it. What an ingenious idea. Had the most fun with this one too, partly because some of the skeletons are so funny looking. I hope you create more like it. I'd love to try and guess the skeletons of other animals. I felt like such a dope for not getting camel and penguin which look so obvious now. I thought number 2 was a cow and number 20 was a duck. The funniest one is number one. Didn't get that one either, but the knuckled knees should have been a clue not to mention the trunk. Doh.

Alligator and Crocodile aren't the same thing. Tough, because the pig, cat, dog, horse, chimp, and gorilla are all the same size.

@owaincolin- As noted in the archived comments: I used the images out of scale for two reasons. As for the gator and croc, the differences that they do have are nearly impossible to tell on a wide-shot skeletal photo, so I've accepted them both to be fair.

Is it just me, or does the dolphin look like the loch ness monster?
Nov 3rd, 2010 at 05:03 GMT
There must be more elephants and frogs using Sporcle than I previously thought...
Nov 3rd, 2010 at 05:41 GMT
and 10.5% of people don't recognize there own skeleton. That is, assuming that humans are taking this quiz. and snakes I guess.
Nov 3rd, 2010 at 05:45 GMT
It depresses me that "Human" is not the most often-guessed...
Nov 3rd, 2010 at 06:42 GMT
human is at the bottom of the quiz. Some people probably give up before then
