There have been a few other versions of this quiz done in the past, but were not arranged by resolution number/year and did not exclude observation and peacekeeping missions. This seemed a bit more straightforward to me. If you believe I've missed one, let me know.

Why is resolution R-504 by consensus but others 15-0?

@ahamilton- Good question, but one to which I don't have an answer. I would assume that "by consensus" means that they didn't take a roll call vote, though I'm not sure why.

the 1990 one with iraq/kuwait, you have 12-2-1 (Cuba, Yemen/China), just wondering if it should be 12-1-2 (Cuba, Yemen/China)..or maybe 12-2-1 (Yemen/China, Cuba) or even 12-2-1 (Cuba/Yemen, China)..jst trying to help =/

Oh right, Mozambique. With an AK-47 on their flag there must have been something of this sort in their history.

@juusosieni: Um, no. Just to name a few: North Korea in 1950? Iraq in 1990? Civil War in Yugoslavia? Each of these had large armies and were already at war before UN intervention.

Also it's not only about a "powerful army" but also about police forces, militias, insurgents. A country in trouble tends to have an astonishing amount of weaponry for or against whatever side.

shouldn't you accept indonesia for east timor, seeing as east timor only became a country very recently?

Great suggestion, dandan44sou! The resolution in question specifically authorizes action in 'East Timor' which is why I listed it that way, but despite the self-rule resolution in 1999 independence didn't actually occur until 2002. Indonesia is added.

Cyprus? What happened there?

@eab21: In a nutshell, in 1974 a coup put Greek Cypriots in power who favored the island becoming a part of Greece. In response, Turkey invaded the northern part of the island. The UN came in to keep peace along the dividing line between north and south, and the country has been divided ever since. (Currently, though, there are ongoing demonstrations for unifying the island. We'll see what happens.)

Akhoya: I've had the honor and privilege to speak with some of the higher ups from Cyprus, both sides of the island, including their ambassadors. While there is always talk of unification, I've heard very little from either side that would lead me to believe that unification will happen in my lifetime. Both sides accuse the other of so much, and feel they are in the right. Negotiations based on those opinions...well they tend not to go well. But we can continue to hope for the best.

Wow, what an illuminating quiz. I never knew about half of these conflicts. The 1997 Rebellion in Albania was started over a faulty economic system in which Ponzi schemers cheated two in every three Albanians out of their own money. Crazy! Is Bernie Madoff Albanian?

@Shayxin- There is no U.N. Force in Afghanistan. The military intervention that began there in 2001 has NATO support but is a multi-national force and is not led by the U.N.
