NHL: Chris Simon had two suspensions in 2007: one for 30 games for stomping on Ruutu and another for 25 games for slashing Hollweg. Also, Billy Coutu had a life suspension for attacking 2 referees during a Stanley Cup playoff game in 1927.
NFL: Stanley Wilson had a life suspension in 1989 for substance abuse, and it was not commuted. Dexter Manley's life suspension was commuted after 1 year. Earl Ferrell also had a life suspension in 1990, but he chose to retire.
MLB: There were five life suspensions of players prior to the modern era, including George Bechtel in 1876 and four of his Louisville teammates in 1877. Joe Gedeon of the Browns received a life suspension as fallout from the Black Sox case. The Phillies' Eugene Paulette was suspended for life in 1921, also for consorting with gamblers. Benny Kauff was suspended for life in 1921 for selling stolen cars, and his ban was not lifted after he was acquitted. In 1922, Phil Douglas was banned for life after he wrote a letter to another player stating that that he would walk out on the team rather than help his manager (whom he'd argued with) win a pennant. In 1924, Jimmy O'Connell offered an opponent $500 to throw a game and was also suspended for life. Ray Fisher was suspended for life in 1921 for failing to honor his Reds contract (he was reinstated in 1980, at age 93 - and was invited to Old-Timers day at Yankee Stadium in 1982, and threw out the opening pitch at age 95). |
