| @Ismitje: if you go back into the past, more and more appear. There were the United Provinces of New Granada (Colombia), the United Provinces of Central America, the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (Argentina), the United States of Brazil, etc. Seemingly after 1776 the style of naming new countries as "United States/Provinces of ... " caught on. A curious fact is that according to the Argentine Constitution, you *still* can refer to Argentina officially as the "United Provinces of the Río de la Plata" (as well as "Argentine Confederation" and "Argentine Republic"). Of course nobody does it nowadays, so it's correct not to include Argentina in the quiz. (The Constitution is from 1853 and the article that allows the three names was never modified). |
