| To all those "lamenting" the Sporcle effect on people's braines: (1) Kyrgyzstan was the least guessed "stan." And as for Spain and China--this is one of those cases where most of us, whether we're sounding it out in our heads or looking over a real or imaginary map, have sounds in our head as we do it. For "in" we have the sound of the word "in" and we miss "Spain," which has a diphthong. For "ina," when we're thinking of international sounds, we're mostly thinking "eena," so we pick up on "Argentina" and miss "China." OK, so Argentina was missed more than China (!), but that's what I did the first time while getting Ghana and (the first time) Botswana! China is the most widely recognized "na." |
