Good quiz. However, wouldn't India be part of "British Colonies" and Newfoundland part of Canada?

Newfoundland was not a part of Canada until 1949. "British Colonies" is listed separately by the British War Office. Presumably because their armed forces would be under the direct control of the UK, whereas the others (Canada, India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand) were self standing armies?

Great quiz, but I too was confused by the separate entries for "British Colonies" and India and others.

Perhaps I should have been clear too, about who "British Colonies" are. They do not include the other listed colonies. They include such places as British East Africa, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Burma, Ceylon, British Caribbean islands, Bermuda, Gibraltar, Malta, Cyprus, etc.

Good quiz - stretched my thinking. It's a good thing there were a lot less countries around back then!

GOOD QUIZ! But I, too, forgot that Canada didn't join Newfoundland until 1949! DOH!

Sweden, Norway and Denmark didn't fight in WWI, so do those numbers represent volunteers who fought for other nations?

Ericderkonig: Norway/Sweden/Denmark lost many merchant sailors that were trading in war zones, IIRC Norway lost about half of our trade fleet in the war.

Good quiz; maybe you should specify what you mean by "nation," since a good deal of these weren't independent. Maybe call Nigeria, Hong Kong, etc. "Other British Colonies," since some are listed individually. Also, post a link to your source.

Solid quiz, always enjoy WWI quizzes. Doesn't get enough attention, but I think it rivals if not surpasses WWII in shear magnitude, significance, and expanse of fighting. I appreciate you giving due respect to the self-standing armies of the Commonwealth, but I wish the same could be said of France and Germany.

Great quiz and interesting answers. I hadn't expected the Russian and Ottoman Empire casualties to exceed Germany's.

I always forget Montenegro and NFL in WWI quizzes. It's hard to remember that one of the world's two "newest" countries was one back then...and that there was a separate nation in Canada!

Brazil didn't even have 415 casualties?

Worth noting that the parts of the British Empire listed separately (India and the Dominions) were not, strictly speaking, colonies, so the quiz is technically accurate.
