| As the owner of a Masters in linguistics I can clear this up. 'Have' and 'halve' are not homophones in most accents of British English as they actually contain different vowel sounds, 'have' being pronounced with the same vowel as CAT and 'halve' with a vowel more like CAR (if you're from Boston you will not get this differece). However, in most accents of US English, 'halve' is also pronounced with the CAT vowel, so the two words can be homophones. Oh, and no-one pronounces the 'l', try it and you'll see what I mean. |
