| Pogues, if you don't understand how something works, don't act like the other guy is ignorant because he understands how it works. You've never understood it not because it doesn't make sense, but because you've never understood it. The Hall of Fame vote is its own animal and a lot more is going on than simply electing the few worthies. Statements are made about various things, stands are taken, and yes, respect is given to certain good not great players, who represented the sport well, by giving them some votes and keeping them in the voting every year.
Grace was a class act (on the field, anyway - off the field he was a carouser but not a bad guy by any means) for a long time and a very, very good hitter and fielder. He was extremely consistent. He was also a non-power hitter batting in the 3 or 4 spot every year during the steroid boom, and not embarrassing himself at all. In a way he was an ideal player. |
