| A lineal title is a theoretical title that doesn't follow a promotion's own title records. So for example, a fighter could win a belt in the UFC, leave the company, be stripped of the title by the UFC, but would still be considered lineal champion.
To lose a lineal title, a lineal champion has to lose to any fighter in the same weight class. The Heavyweight class didn't exist in the UFC prior to UFC 12. From UFC 12 to UFC 30, the Heavyweight class contained all fighters above 200lbs. From UFC 31 to today, the class has contained all fighters in the 205-265lbs range.
Each new lineal title has to be created by the UFC. Generally, the UFC creates new titles when previous champions leave the promotion as champions.
