According to your source, Calcutta has 5,080,519. It also says Peking has 7,817,968.

Peking is Beijing, and Calcutta is Kolkatta, officially and internationally.

Somehow all the cities in Asia I can name start with the same few letters. What's up with that?

Istanbul is located on the boshphorus, the traditional separation between Asia and Europe. Perhaps the second most populated city beginning with I should be a bonus (whatever it is.)

I see that your source generally doesn't count metropolitan areas (if it did, Tokyo would be a lot bigger), but for some reason it counts Metro Manilla (made up of 16 independent cities) as one city. That's a problem for this quiz, because the biggest city in Metro Manilla, Quezon City, is over 2.5 million -- larger than the other Q on this list, Qingdao.

I question the accuracy here, since the 2001 census in Hong Kong places it at over 6 million people.

@TheArbiter: My guess for the next highest 'I' is Islamabad, I didn't even think of Istanbul.

Re: Istanbul, it's the right answer. The city is mostly on the European side of the Bosphorus by a ratio of about 70:30, but, according to the source, the next largest 'I' city, Izmir, has about 2.75m inhabitants, less than 30% of Istanbul's nearly 12m anyway.

@Tir McDoh: I tried at least 4 different spellings of Islamabad before I would accept that it wasn't the answer. I just didn't realize there were that many people in Istanbul!

I agree, some of the population figures don't seem quite right - but I guess there are so many different sources it's pretty difficult to know exactly what's right.

Islamabad's not half as big as you think it would be - way less than a million inhabitants. It's a fairly new, planned capital city, like Brasilia.

Doesn't Chongqing China have something like 31 million? Even city proper is over 5 million which would be more than Chennai.

This quiz is rubbish. There's no variation whatsoever, only about three different countries are covered here. Someone before me said Ulaanbataar should have been included and I agree.

@buppyspek: There are probably over 15 million people living in and around Istanbul. Many move from the country and erect makeshift dwellings literally overnight. Once they are occupied the government cannot evict them easily so these sprawls on the edge of town keep growing. Or so my friend told me, when I visited him in Istanbul a few years ago. Amazing city and amazing people.

I typed Ho Chi Minh, but it didn't accept. I actually have to type the word "City" for it to count? That's pretty ridiculous.

Actually, if you live in Asia, you're probably not as educated as a person from a western country, so this won't be more like ABC to you.

In addition to contaminating our atmosphere with an astonishing amount of greenhouse gases, China is also slowly killing my enthusiasm for Asian Geography trivia.

Sneuticles - What gives anyone the right to say they can't do exactly what the west did to develop. USA, UK and the rest of the modern world all pumped greenhouse gases into the atmosphere with reckless abandon. In fact, since I've been in China I've been surprised. Most people ride bikes, or e-bikes which run on electricity. Many of the street lights are solar powered. And they are investing heavily into producing solar energy. Seems very hypacritical not to allow them to produce their own waste at the detriment to development.

@Steesh: China and the other developing countries should have the right to - but unfortunately given the potential catstrophe if they do we all need to be able to say none of us can have that right anymore.
