just heard today for the 1st time that Armstrong said his real quote was one small step for a man, which does make more sense, because in the context of the quote we all know, man & mankind have the same meaning http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/one-small-step-for-man-or-a-man-armstrong-said-his-famous-words-from-the-moon-were-misquoted/2012/08/25/b43c08b8-ef03-11e1-b624-99dee49d8d67_story.html

@rmc512: Yes, and no. There IS a gap long enough between "for" and "man" for there to be an 'a,' and that's likely the way it was written...but as far as the recording goes, there's no explicit 'a'. (I'd say put it as a bonus.)

For many years NASA said that static prevented the 'a' from being heard, but Mr. Armstrong finally admitted that he accidentally omitted saying it. Very understandable since anyone would have been overwhelmed by being the first to do something that had been written and dreamt about probably ever since man/mankind first looked up in the skies. Yes, RIP Mr. Armstrong.

Cool to see Neil Armstrong on this, but the quote is incorrect. "That's one small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxlp1Xhb6z4 Check it for yourself. The "A" is less dominate than the other words, but it's there.

@cranium I kind of agree, but at least it's just the first word which is tripping people up - I'll admit I was trying 'it's', 'here's', 'now', 'so', and all-sorts... RIP Neil Armstrong

To clear up any confusion about the "a", I originally made it as a bonus answer between step and man (knowing that it was inteded to be said, but ommitted), but realized that it would only end up at the end of the quiz (where all bonus answers go), so I excluded it entirely.

Geo1: What you can do is put "a" in brackets before "man" so readers know that it was what he *should have said but omitted.
