This is great! Aaaand, I've finally found the generation where my name (Elizabeth) would actually border on unique.

Same here with Sarah! I was really surprised by some of the seemingly common names that weren't popular in 1950.

If you polled 60-year olds while doing this quiz, and asked their names, then you could do quite well on it.

If you're in your 20s or 30s, then much of this list simply reads as "mom names" and "dad names."

(Btw, a few years ago, I compared the 1950, 1975, and 2000 lists to figure out each generation's most typical mom names and dad names. Results here: http://jaymc.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html#115800144935002754)

I really enjoy these quizzes. Fun to see trends, too. And, yes, it did come down to a lot of "Mom and Dad? Aunts and Uncles? Mom and Dad's Bible Study? Their Facebook Friends?" It was very helpful. (Yes, my parents have Facebook and, yes, I'm friends with them. I

After I went through names of relatives and friends, I moved on to television shows and music. It'll be interesting to see a quiz like this 50 years down the line... kids will be thinking, wow our parents had such old school names.

Apparently, I don't have enough relatives. Also not helping: stubborn insistence that Ann or Anne MUST be on there and retyping it at least five times.

You mean Adolf wasn't popular in 1950!!! I am surprised there weren't more biblical names on that list, Peter, Mark, Luke, Daniel all missing!

Not too many of these names surprisse me as I know at least one person with each of the names from that generation, save for Steven/Stephen, Sandra, and Brenda. I association those names with people born in the 60s or 70s.

@Detektor I got a lot of the boys names by going through 60's/70s rock band members.

Boys names hardly seem to change! Going biblical and then kings of England always gives a good few. Except I didn't get Joseph or Mary. Duh.

Well, when your family is Mediterranean, guessing names from your parent's generation doesn't always work too well... hahaha! No Alvaro, Albertina, Manuel? What a shocker! Although I am surprised at the lack of Maria and Ann(e).

Many of these names are timeless. I pity the poor 70-year-old in the future stuck with monikers like Morgan and Tyler.

I was also surprised at no Ann or Anne; I know many of them in this age group. On the other hand, I don't know a Shirley under 75 (except Shirley Manson); that name surprised me.

Having been born in the 1950s, I went for the names of my classmates in school. Of course, having been born in the 1950s, I have "CRS" and couldn't remember any of them. And yes, my name is on that list....

It's one of the rare decades where Elizabeth didn't make the top 20. A little tidbit: If you add together the variations Deborah, Debra and Debbie, it was the most common girls' name of the decade. Which is why I every single class I was ever in from grade school through high school had another Debbie.
