| Elsewhere on Sporcle there is much discussion about cities which have "City" added to their name to distinguish them from the countries that were subsequently named for their capital city. Panama, Kuwait, Guatemala, Mexico and Luxembourg are all named for the city which is their capital rather than the other way around. Belize would be in a similar position except that the capital was moved to Belmopan in 1970. The use of the word city in each case is for convenience and does not form part of the official titles. This is no different to the use of New York City to distinguish it from New York State or Galway City to distinguish ot from the County Galway. Kansas City and Oklahoma City are the correct official names of those places. Accordingly, it would be inconsistent to exclude Luxembourg from this quiz (although the use of the term Luxembourg City is not as common in English). Incidentally, the official name of the subject of this quiz is Vatican City State (or State of the Vatican City) although its capital is correctly called Vatican City. |
